Celebrity Endorsements-Do We Really Care

After watching this video of Matt Damon talking about Sarah Palin and reading Lindsay Lohan’s rant on the upcoming election, I have come to the conclusion that celebrities are doing more harm than good with their endorsements.

I can just imagine how pleased (insert sarcasm) Barrack Obama was when he heard that Lohan was stumping* for him.   Do we really care what this person has to say?

Um….no.

Actually I think if anything it hurts Obama to have so many celebrities backing him.  I guess that is why he turned her down when she offered to host a series of events aimed at young voters.

Just out of curiousity, I wanted to see if McCain had any celebrity supporters.  It appears he does.  Among them is one that balances out the Lohan/Obama ticket quite nicely.  That would be this idiot:

Apparently, Heidi Montag told US Weekly that she is a Republican and is voting for McCain.

Again, do we really care? She’s not even a real celebrity anyway.

I think Kid Rock said it best (God, I can’t believe I’m quoting Kid Rock.  This is an all time low for my blog.) when he said:

“I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics.

Because at the end of the day, I’m good at writing songs and singing. What I’m not educated in is the field of political science. And so for me to be sharing my views and influencing people of who I think they should be voting for … I think would be very irresponsible on my part.”

I think that is the first and last time I will ever agree with anything Kid Rock has to say.  (Though, he may be growing on me because he was the genius behind that song “All Summer Long”-isn’t that such a great song?!)

For the record, I’m not even swayed by this picture:

Nope.  Not even a little bit.  Still undecided. **

Since Ryan Gosling is Canadian, I’m not even sure he will be able to vote in the election come November.  So, I would like to offer him my vote.

I take bribes and these are my conditions:

1.  Come to my house and stump* for Obama.  By stump, I mean give me a back massage while going over the important issues and why I should vote for him.

2.  Take me on a rowboat ride and tell me more about why I should vote for Obama.  If it rains and we can act out the “It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over,” kissing scene from The Notebook, I will definitely be more inclined to go with Obama.  Even more points if he has grown out his beard a little bit for the occasion.

3. Finally, my vote will definitely go to Obama if Ryan and Rachel would invite me to their wedding (that of course needs to happen before November, so they better get their cute butts to a wedding planner and start making some damn plans).  I don’t have to make a speech or even get to dance with the groom.  I’d just like to be a witness to the greatest event in the history of the world.  That is all I ask.

These are my terms and conditions.  They are non-negotiable.  If you want my vote, Gosling, you’re gonna have to pay up.  See the fancy little contact button up there.  Let’s talk.

*I really have no idea what the words “stump” or “stumping” mean.  I just have fun trying to use them in conversation and blog posts.

**This is a totally bipartisan*** post.  I am really not trying to stump for either of the candidates.

*** I’m not even totally sure if I used the word “bipartisan”  correctly in the above sentence.

Nothing Lindsay Lohan says is of any interest to me. I have to agree with Kid (a first for me too) that celebs should stay out of politics. Though I do think what Diddy did for the last election in encouraging the younger set to register was a good thing.

I love the new blog by the way…:-)

This was a GREAT post, and I have often wondered why celebrities feel the need to subject us to their political views- they get paid to ACT, or SING, or ENTERTAIN, not offer us their political thoughts. Whenever I hear or see a celebrity endorsing someone, I just tune it out-they have no credibility with me in the political arena.

I have to agree with Kid Rock, and I too, am amazed I actually agree with something he said. I just hope he didn’t have his wife beater shirt on when he said it.

I guess there is a first for everything- well said Kid Rock. :-)

You freaking crack me up. I loved this. I’d totally stump you.
Ok, that sounds gross and a little more creepy than I had intended. To clarify, in this context, “stump” means “share plentiful laughs and continue to delight in reading one’s blog posts, even on days other than Friday when there are no shirtless men.”

i happen to adore Kid Rock… and I think what he said is exactly right… As much as i love Ryan Gosling (which is a little less than you do) I think he shouldn’t be promoting anyone.

But yeah, celebrities (american or not) should stay out of it. I have complete respect for M. Damon and LOVED his jimmy kimmel videos but could he have sounded like more of a bumbling fool?

It’s midnight and I’m exhausted so this comment may read like a pitch for a sitcom (listen up NBC)
-Jen and husband agree to divorce so that Jen can marry Ryan.
-Ryan moves in with Jen, 1st husband, and kids until the green card arrives.
    -Three’s Company antics ensue
    -Ryan votes Obama
    - Jen’s husband votes McCain
-Rachel joins cast when ratings drop
-Jen has front row seats for all things McGosling, maid of honor, godmother, babysitter, all you baby!

Unfortunately, I think many of the younger crowd (18-22) are swayed by the celebrities. If their fav is voting one way, then they think they should too. And if all the cool celebs are voting for that person, they think there’s no way it could be the wrong vote. Fortunately, I am old enough to make a decision on my own (I guess that’s unfortunate too because that means I’m getting old….)

    You are so funny!

Very smart words from the mouth of Kid Rock! It’s a shame that young people put so much stock in what celebrities have to say.

Ok, delete the words Ryan Gosling and insert Johnny Depp or Daniel Radcliffe in your list of demands and I’ll totally vote for their candidate.

I think in general celebrities end up sounding stupid when they elaborate on liking a candidate. If they want to lend their support then they should do so with a donation and maybe one sentence – I support XXXX.. I don’t think we’ll ever get them to not lend us their opinion since they all have such incredibly large HEADS. But it would be less annoying if they didn’t talk. Looking pretty is their “thang”.

Excellent quote by Kid Rock – I hope some other celebs pic up on it, although it doubtful. I have the distinct impression that the more paparazzi cameras aimed at you, the fewer the brain cells in your head. Hmm, I wonder if all those flashing cameras kill the brain cells, or if they just weren’t there to begin with … such things I ponder …

    ~LOL~

lmao I love it when you talk politics, Jen. Your political posts are always fun to read – and with cute pictures of Gosling. I like the way you think. And I agree, that might be the only instance in which I’ve agreed with Kid Rock.

Hee! Great post. And I also cannot believe I am agreeing with Kid Rock. Very good call on his part, though. Too bad more celebrities don’t see fit to keep their views to themselves.

Have you seen McCain interviewed when he was told Heidi Montag was supporting him? He responded something to the effect of, ‘eh….wow…she’s a great actress.’

Nope, as sad as this is, even Ryan Gosling, looking ten different kinds of hot in that there photo, is not going to sway me. I am still just as damned undecided as I was a few minutes ago.

I think I’m going to go read up on Bob Barr.

I like how all of the above comments were wonderfully free from partisanship. No one insisted that you MUST vote for Obama or that old guy and his civil rights stompin’ moose huntin’ side kick. I too will not try to sway you one way or another.

Again, you’re hilarious. And I’m not a big Kid Rock fan either and I hadn’t heard or read his quote before reading it here. But I have to say, I’m very pleasantly shocked at his level-headedness.

Man, I can’t believe I used level-headedness and Kid Rock in the same sentence! But he’s right, he’s sooo right.

I agree wtih the “bumbling fool” comment about Matt Damon. He was once on my Top 5 list, but after seeing that video he went down, way down. Why Matt why??? Oh, and I don’t think they sway the young vote very much, if at all. Ever since Diddy started his campaign (was it in 2000 when Al Gorge was running? I can’t remember exactly but I think so.) at getting the youngsters out there to vote it’s been shown that the percentage of youngsters voting hasn’t increased. I think they show up to the events to see Diddy and other celebs, but then come that Tuesday in November, they are not at the polls. So again, just one more reason they need to stay out the political arena.

I totally agree that no one should allow what a “celebrity” has to say sway their vote. However, I have to say that I was totally shocked to see that Ms. Lohan is actually capable of intelligent thought. Perhaps there is hope after all.

P.S. I hope that Mr. Gosling feels so strongly that Obama needs every possible vote that he does indeed contact you to try to win you over!

YOU are sooo funny AND smart ! Just the right combination for someone like Ryan! No wonder I discovered your blog since discovering HIM! I love your latest about voting and HIM. Where do you get this stuff?(Bet you do have a great hubby!) If I had the internet back when I first started having babies in ‘82 maybe I would’ve remained sane during their upbringing! As it is my youngest is 17, I’m a 48ish single mom of 3 and grandma of 1 and I’m just coming to! Keep writing and traveling to wherever you dream up this stuff ! (could it be the BUS?)
PS:Someone has to get this latest to Ryan ! If you’ve listened / read just about all the interviews he’s done like me, you KNOW what a funny guy he is….LOVE him teaching Ellen to salsa on youtube….wasn’t that great? “Don’t worry…. I won’t get fresh(while putting her hand on his but)….I mean, you’re a sexy woman and I’m only Human” (HA,ha,ooooh, IS He Really?) Yep, and that’s why we like him….(Oh my,maybe I am still insane! ) And did you catch that “I’m only human” line from ‘The united states of Leland’? Do you think he did that on purpose… just checking if we’re listening? You know it !
