Fact or Fiction?

**Please note: This giveaway is now closed to new entries.

Another giveaway.  Can you stand it?  Are you sick of free stuff yet?  Can you ever be sick of free stuff?

I was debating about whether or not to do this, but after reading this wonderful news I decided that I needed to do something to celebrate.  You will need to do two things to be eligible to win.

(You know my giveaways can never be easy.  I always make you work for your entry and I can already hear you cussing me out under your breath.  At least I’m giving you fair warning.)

  • First, I thought it would be fun to play a little game of Fact or Fiction.  Below you will find 10 statements that may or may not describe me.  All of them are lies except for one.  It is your job to try to figure out which one is the truth.

  • In addition to giving your answer to the game, please leave me the title of the best book you’ve ever read (Fiction or Non-Fiction).  I’m always looking for some good recommendations so I thought why not ask you all for some good picks.

I will do a random drawing and if the person is correct with their guesses to the game, they will win the prize.

Oh, did I forget to mention the prize?  I guess that is kind of an important little piece of information.

It is a $10 gift card from Barnes and Nobles.

Here is an example of what your comment should look like:

I think #1 is true.  (This is not necessarily the right answer, just an example.)

The Lovely Bones is my favorite book.

This contest will be open until Monday, August 4th at 10pm EST.  You do not need a blog to enter, but I am disqualifying all of my family and real-life friends from this contest.  You all know me too well, so it won’t be fair.  Sorry.

FACT OR FICTION?

       1.  One of my favorite fruits is the cantaloupe and one of my least favorites is the pear.

2.  My favorite show is General Hospital.  I tivo it and watch it almost every night before going to bed.

3.  If I was given the choice to live in the middle of the city or the middle of the country, I would choose the country.

4.  My least favorite household chore is unloading the dishwasher.

5.  If I were to win the lottery, the first place I would go would be England.

6.  I had open heart surgery as a child.

7.  I have seen every Ryan Gosling movie ever made.

8.  I got pregnant with my son on a trip to Vegas.

9.   Jack Johnson is my favorite singer.

10.  I wake up everyday around 6:30am.  Mornings are my favorite time of the day.

Remember there is only 1 true statement in the bunch.  If you think you know what it is, leave me a comment with the number and also the title of the best book you’ve ever read (Fiction or Non-Fiction).  Come back next Monday night to find out the truth and who our winner is.  Good luck!

    I think #7 is true.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt is a fabulous book.

  2. Jen E on July 31st, 2008 8:24 am

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that #7 is true - wild guess, mind you. :P

My favorite book is always a toss up between Lamb by Christopher Moore and Gone With the Wind. But I like sooooooooooooo many books, that lately I wonder if I aught to spice things up a bit and name a new book as my favorite just to keep people guessing - like maybe tomorrow my favorite book will be Crime and Punishment (which would be a long shot as I’ve never read it), and then the day after that, The Scarlett Letter (nevermind I hated the book with every fiber of my being) and then the day after THAT it’d be Twilight by Stephenie Meyer tied with Uglies by Scott Westerfeld tied to A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray because honestly, my point is that I hate making decisions - but those three books are all actually ones I like, so yeah. There you go.

  3. Patrice on July 31st, 2008 8:46 am

Yeah, I’m gonna have to go with #7. It almost seems to easy, like maybe it’s a trick question but I’m going to go ahead and guess it anyway!
And my favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Actually almost anything by Jodi Picoult but since your making me pick one, I’m going w/ that one.

  4. Heather Johnson on July 31st, 2008 8:57 am

    Ok, I’m thinking (hoping?!) that # 7 is a trick answer, so I’m going to go with # 3. I’m a rebel, I know.

I have two book recommendations - I couldn’t decide which was better:

The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley - fabulous female-centered version of the King Arthur legend - the characters are amazing, the story is familiar but new, and you’ll really get drawn into the plotting

The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver - her writing is magnificent - the story is told from 5 points of view and each has a very distinct voice - everyone I’ve recommended this book to has loved it, including all 14 members of my book club

  5. Emily on July 31st, 2008 9:47 am

Ummmm….#7 and Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (with the sequel….World Without End is a close second).

  6. Mrs. Sara on July 31st, 2008 9:54 am

I think #7 is true. I don’t know if you’re into Jane Austen books, but Mansfield Park is one of my favorites!

  7. nonsoccermom on July 31st, 2008 9:57 am

I’m going to go with #2.

I’m not much into books to be perfectly honest. I am probably the worst person in the world to give you advice in this category. However, the last book I read and really enjoyed was Love and Meatballs by Susan Volland. I picked it up off the 25 cent rack at Half Price Books and was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked it a lot!!

  8. Sally on July 31st, 2008 9:59 am

I’m cheating and looking at the other people’s answers. #7 seems to be the most popular so I’ll go with that too.

My favorite book is Anne of Green Gables.

    I think #3 is true.

One of my favorite books is Foundation by Isaac Asimov.

  15. Michelle on July 31st, 2008 10:18 am

Well, after reading your 100 Things About Me post, which helped me eliminate a few options, using my deductive reasoning skills and the fact that you have Ryan Gosling stuff posted all over, I will have to go with #7 being True.

One of my favourite books is The Hawk and the Dove by Penelope Wilcock.

  16. LadySnow on July 31st, 2008 10:19 am

This could be a trick but I am going with #7….I have seen a lot of him on your blog. :D

  17. Stacy on July 31st, 2008 10:21 am

I thought I could do research to find out the correct answer so I actually read your 100 things about you. My research did not help so I am going with the obvious, #7. My book choice is Redemption by Karen Kingsbury.

  18. Trisha on July 31st, 2008 10:21 am

I am going to say #4..

  22. Qtpies7 on July 31st, 2008 10:41 am

Because I followed your links I believe #7 is true.
And the best book ever is a series and it is Abram’s Daughters by Beverly Lewis. You will not be able to put them down! Buy the whole set before you start, not kidding!

I have no idea who Ryan and Rachel are, but I will celebrate your joy in their maybe togetherness by entering your giveaway, lol.

  23. Anissa on July 31st, 2008 10:58 am

    I’ll go w/ 7 as well.

One of my fav books is The Eyre Affair and if you’d read any classics then this is the book for you as it’s full of inside jokes on Jane Eyre, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen to name a few:)

  24. Amy on July 31st, 2008 11:12 am

I think 4 is true: My least favorite household chore is unloading the dishwasher. Probably because it’s one of my least favorite chores.

I LOVE to read… I CAN’T pick a favorite, but Mary Higgins Clark always keeps me awake at night. I also enjoy Amish stories - Beverly Lewis, Wanda Brustrater, Cindy Woodsmall

  25. Go Amie on July 31st, 2008 11:13 am

I think #10 is true. One of the best books I ever read is “Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jared Diamond. I also want to second Anissa’s suggestion of “The Eyre Affair” by Jasper Fforde - it’s marvelous.

  26. Susan on July 31st, 2008 11:16 am

Judging by the poll on your blog, I have to go with #7. And ONE of my favorite books is “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver.

  27. Diana Dang on July 31st, 2008 11:26 am

    Uhh, I think

    2. My favorite show is General Hospital. I tivo it and watch it almost every night before going to bed.

is true…? I doubt it but whatever. xD

  28. Sandra on July 31st, 2008 11:29 am

I would have to say number 7 as well. As for a favorite book…that is very hard as I haven’t had much time to read in recent years…I liked reading the Left Behind series as it was quick and easy and yet entertaining and suspenseful.

  29. bunny on July 31st, 2008 11:31 am

    I’m sure no.7 is true! :P
I loved The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale!

  30. Marlene on July 31st, 2008 11:32 am

    #7 is true. LOL

  31. Annabelle@Christian Momma on July 31st, 2008 11:35 am

    I’m guessing #7 too!
“Hinds Feet on High Places” by Hannah Hunard was a really good book!

  32. jainhollie on July 31st, 2008 11:52 am

I’ll have to say number seven is the true statement! LOL

When you ask me to list my FAVORITE book of all time… well, its just impossible. Even stretching it to ‘favorite series’ of books is difficult. So here, try these:

    Hyperion - by Dan Simmons
Storm Front - by Jim Butcher (all all the other Dresden Files books)

Hyperion is science fiction at its best, and Storm Front is the most entertaining noir-ish contemporary fantasy mystery fiction ever written. I’m pretty sure that’s what its classified as. And noir-ish is a word. Honest.

  33. Carol on July 31st, 2008 11:57 am

#4 true. I hate unloading the dishwasher and most people I know do too. I dont’ even have one, but that’s what I always do when I go to my parents cause Mom hates doing it. One of my favorite books was Summer Sisters by Judy Blume.

  34. Sarah, Goon Squad Sarah on July 31st, 2008 12:19 pm

  35. Heather on July 31st, 2008 12:21 pm

My favorite book is The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Simply a wonderful book.

  36. karissa on July 31st, 2008 12:27 pm

Just by the above “poll” of comments already above and figuring some of them might actually know you, I am going with #7. and your pic of Ryan over there. and I saw a girl talking on TMZ last night about how hot he is, and I will just take that as a sign.

The Kite Runner is great. So is the Memory Keeper’s Daughter and Running with Scissors. ANd if you want an Old Classic my fave is Where the Redfern Grows. MY all time FAVE! I can cry just thinking about it.

  37. trish on July 31st, 2008 12:27 pm

Has to be 7, or it wouldn’t be a true obsession. Fav book is “Life of Pi”

    trixiemayATaolDOTcom

  38. Kathleen W. on July 31st, 2008 12:28 pm

I’d say number 7 based on your sidebar thing on Ryan, but that could be a red herring…so I’ll go with number 4.

And my favorite book is The Joy Luck Club. I reread it every year!

  39. Rita A. on July 31st, 2008 12:32 pm

I also would choose #7 based on your photo collection. My favorite book ever was a collection of short stories called Dragon Fantastic. It was all about dragons and I still have the book and have reread many of the stories over and over again.

  40. M on July 31st, 2008 12:37 pm

I think #4 is true. It’s hard to pick one, but at this very exact moment, my favorite book is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.

  41. Cristina on July 31st, 2008 12:46 pm

I think #7 is true based on your poll questions. Although you may just be trying to throw us off! lol

The last book to really affect me was Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. Great read!

  42. Suzanne on July 31st, 2008 12:56 pm

I think #10 is true. I love the books by Jasper Fforde

  43. Becky@BoysRuleMyLife on July 31st, 2008 12:58 pm

My favorite book is Mitten Strings for God. Read it every summer.

  44. Patti on July 31st, 2008 1:21 pm

I love all Gaberiel Garcia Marquez.

  45. Fedora on July 31st, 2008 1:33 pm

I’m truly horrible at discerning truth from fiction, but given what you’re celebrating, I will guess that #7 is true.
A recent favorite read is Tamera Alexander’s Fountain Creek trilogy–she does an amazing job of incorporating faith into her stories in a very natural way and her characters are incredibly real and memorable. Thanks for the fun!

  46. Mia J. on July 31st, 2008 1:52 pm

I would have to go with #7. Although not my favorite, some really good fun reads that i have really enjoyed lately have been The Spellman Files and curse of the spellmans. They are really entertaining books.

  47. Nise' on July 31st, 2008 1:55 pm

I think #7 is true. I loved reading everyone’s favorite books. One of my favorites is She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb.

  48. Melanie @ Mel, A Dramatic Mommy on July 31st, 2008 1:59 pm

I’d guess the true one is #7. Call me crazy. Three favorites: Little Women, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Outlander.

  49. Brittanie on July 31st, 2008 2:14 pm

I think #7 is true. My all time favorite series is the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson.

  50. Memarie Lane on July 31st, 2008 2:39 pm

I’m going to go with #6, just because it seems so far-fetched. :P

I have quite a few favorite books, so I’ll tell you a few I think YOU would like. Cider House Rules by John Irving (totally different from the film, the film left out the whole point of the book), The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Nefeneger, and Pavilion of Women by Pearl S. Buck. I’m reading this last one right now and it is AMAZING. Also totally different from the film. The film is always different, but in this case especially, the film should be put in maximum security prison for it’s heinous rape of this wonderful book. And I used to think the movie was good. :P

  51. Nikki on July 31st, 2008 2:39 pm

Man!! #7 seems so obvious. I’m a huge Gosling fan, but I couldn’t watch some of those movies. So I’m going with #2! I TiVo Y&R and watch it every night. I think we’re alike, so that’s my choice! lol

I have so many fave books! My faves are:
A confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
    Ask the Dust, John Fante
    Blindness, Jose Saramago

  52. Jody on July 31st, 2008 2:52 pm

I’m going with #5 because it’s true for me! Well, I’d go to Ireland first with a jaunt into England.

It’s difficult for me to pick one favorite book because I have so many that I read and re-read. I never tire of Gone With the Wind. I read it at least once a year.

  53. Heather on July 31st, 2008 3:04 pm

I pick #7. I really liked the Dark Tower series

  54. Sarah at themommylogues on July 31st, 2008 3:42 pm

I’ve been here maybe twice so far, but it’s enough to be able to guess 7. Heath Ledger was my Ryan Gosling. *sniff* Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz is my fav. For enjoyable chick lit I like Kristen Billerbeck.

  55. Angie on July 31st, 2008 3:43 pm

  59. Sarai on July 31st, 2008 6:01 pm

I’m going to take a stab at this and say #7, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact you have a Ryan Gosling poll up, nope, not at all ;) One of my favorite books is The China Garden by Liz Berry (YA Fiction with a touch or paranormal), I checked it out by chance at my local library years ago and after buying my own copy it has remained high on my list of favorite re-read books. It was also the book that first got me interested in owning my own motorcycle as a teenager, which still remains near the top of my Bucket List =) Thanks for the chance!

  60. Katrina on July 31st, 2008 6:10 pm

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  71. Jacqueline in Atlanta on July 31st, 2008 9:03 pm

I am going to guess that #6 is true. I hope not, but that seems like a wild thing to make up and I have a friend who had dozens of surgeries on her eyes when she was a child, so I know it is not that unusual for a child to have something dramatic in their childhood. She says it made her tough. Now she is an ICU nurse and she is tough and her eyes are just fine.

No favorite. I read all the time and could never pick just one book. No way.
Sometimes one sifts up to the top for awhile, but it never stays there for long.
Right now I am reading The Celestine Sibley Sampler, a nonfiction collection of her best columns.
If you are not from the south, Atlanta in particular, you may not know her. She is/was an awesome writer.

    Thanks for having the Giveaway!

I have way too many good books to recommend, my latest favorites are The Host by Stephanie Meyer (her Twilight series is good too) Also I really like the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. Someone else mentioned a Shannon Hale book, I’ve really enjoyed all of hers as well.

I read through all of your 100 things about you and your “Mish Mash” defined post, and I’d have to say #7 is probably the only one that is true… Since you mention hamburgers, #1 is probably false; since you don’t mention General Hospital at all, #2 is probably false; since you mention the beach is your favorite place to live (if you could), #3 must be false since a beach isn’t like the country or the city; since you don’t like any chores, #4 would be false; since you would pick Hawaii or Disney World, #5 would be false; since you mention nothing about open heart surgery, #6 would be false… even though you were a clutz; since you adore Ryan Gosling, I imagine #7 is true; since you mention you don’t like Hooters & bikini-clad women, #8 is probably false; since you don’t mention a favorite singer but you do mention you don’t watch MTV because of tongue rings, #9 is probably false; #10 is definitely false because you specifically say, “I’m not a morning person. Never have been. Probably never will be.”

    In summary,

I think #7 is the right answer.

Best book I’ve ever read: ‘The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis.

    Thanks for the fun giveaway!

I’m guessing number 7 is the correct answer.

My favorite current book is ‘The Road’ by Cormac McCarthy. It’s kind of dark, but uber-brilliant. Plus, it’s being made into a movie that is supposed to be just as brilliant coming out this December staring Viggo Mortensen.

    I think #7 is true.

Tough to pick a favorite book. I read all the time, and have many favorites. One of my top picks is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood.

  90. Kathy on August 1st, 2008 7:48 am

Is it #7 based on the poll you have on your sidebar, that would be my guess. And, my favorite book is “Eleni” a true story about a mother in Greece during the civil war there in the 1930-1940s, written by her only son. Very moving and inspiring. Kathy

It’s really hard to choose a favorite book, but, I’ll go with what I’m reading right now, because I am totally obsessed with it, LOL! It’s the ‘Twilight Sage’ books. I’m on the third one, ‘Eclipse’ and so far it is just as awesome as the first two in the series. Another favorite author is Tracy Chevalier (Girl With a Pearl Earring, The Virgin Blue, etc.)

Okay… I don’t even care if I win. I’m just having too much fun guessing.

#7 is too easy. You wouldn’t make it that easy. Would you?
#8 is just fun. What happens in Vegas…pops up again nine months later.
#10 can’t be true because then I’d have to stop reading your blog because that’s just unnatural.

I’m going with #2 only because my mother has watched General Hospital since the beginning of time and it’s my one guilty pleasure when I’m on vacation.

    Books…oh my, so many.
I’m going with Staircase of a Thousand Steps by Masha Hamilton. Just because it’s one many people haven’t heard of.

  118. Audra Marie on August 3rd, 2008 12:49 pm

Number 7 would make sense, but I’m going with number 5. :) I love the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson. I also love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.
