Help Me Redo My Bathroom

I’m in the process of doing some redecorating.  You know, just trying to do my part to stimulate this darn economy (Oh let me tell you, I’ve found numerous ways to spend this check).  The problem is that I’m no Design Star, so I could use all the help I can get.  That is where you, my readers, come in.  I’m sending out a cry for help to anyone that has any sort of eye for decorating.

My first area of concern is my bathroom.  It is in dire need of a makeover.  The paint/wallpaper is peeling, the light fixture is hideous and the rug and shower curtain have seen better days.

I’m thinking that I want to do something with a blue/brown color combination.  I’m also going for a beachy/spa feel.   Here are a few that I don’t hate:

Linens and Things Urban Living Sea Glass I like that this one is light and airy, but I don’t know about the shimmer.  Do I really want shimmer in the bathroom?  Are we even shimmer people?

Linens and Things Croscill Tassy Shower Curtain  I love this one but in person it is actually a lighter brown.  Almost more the color of poop.  The bathroom sees enough of that already, so I’m not sure about this one either.

Bed Bath and Beyond Capri Stripe  I don’t know what to say about this one.  It’s probably the safest choice of all three.  But also the most boring.  Will the stripes annoy me after a few months?  Will they make me dizzy when I look at them?

At this point (if you are still reading) you are probably muttering to yourself, “Just pick one” or “You’re too picky” or “You’re thinking way too hard about this; it’s just a shower curtain for pete’s sake”.  Well, I agree.  I overthink everything!!  I believe I have OCD when it comes to shopping.  It drives my husband CRAZY!!

A few more things to keep in mind–My bathroom (like the rest of the house) is tiny.  We have white wainscoat on the bottom and will paint the top a color to coordinate with the shower curtain.  That’s about it.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?   I’d greatly appreciate any decorating advice you have for me.

Since your bathroom is tiny, I am assuming that your bathtub makes up an entire wall of your bathroom. If you want to make your bathroom appear larger, I’d go with the shimmer curtain. The shimmer will make the area seem bigger, while the darker curtains will absorb light and make the area seem smaller.

I like the second shower curtain. Not overly busy. If you painted the top part of your walls a blue it would look lovely. I really like the ladder shelfy thing too. I think you need to buy that as well!! I have two similar ones in my living room, very awesome.

Not to complicate things fro you, but I like the stripes. I think they would echo the vertical lines in the wainscot and give the room a beachy feel. A paint color I love is denim by Laura Ashley. It looks great with white wainscot and would compliment the curtain nicely.
Safe does not have to be boring. You can “bring in da funk” with accessories.

I like them in the order you posted them, from top to bottom. I think you can handle some shimmer! Can’t wait to see some before and afters :D

Oooh, I like option #1 the best. I love that color combination and I think it will work really well in a small bathroom. I want some before and after pics too!!

Hi again! I’m just reading your past blogs when i came to this one :) so i thought i’d give you my two cents (since you asked!)

I LOVE blue and brown together, in fact one of the bathrooms in my house are those colors, but I did add an icey green color to jazz it up a little. And actually the curtain in the first picture is almost identical to the one i have. But anyways, i really like the stripes… “franticallysimple” said with the waiscoat it would be a beachy feel and i totally agree! Plus, stripes are funky, but not so funky you can’t change up the look with different accessories. You could get some great frames for the walls and change the look just by changing the pics in them… etc. I’m excited to see what you come up with tho!

Funny! I just bought the 2nd shower curtain for my bathroom ;-) I’m kind of overdoing the blue/brown combo though as those are the colors in my son’s room, and were going to be the colors in my bedroom and basement, but I had to put a hault to the blue/brown combo. I just love brown though and it goes with almost anything - pink, green, orange - a lot of things you can do. Just be careful, I’m weird about mixing silver accents with brown (i feel they should be mixed with golf, bronze, etc.) but then you really limit yourself! There is so much more silver/brushed nickel stuff out there that finding gold or bronze is very difficult. Remember, simple is better. Less is more. Good idea looking at bathrooms that are already put together though. I was told to always buy a design magazine and glance through those rooms to get ideas - something I still haven’t learned yet :-(
