Just Say No
I have never tried using illegal drugs. Not even once. Not even the whole “I smoked but didn’t inhale.” Clinton nonsense. When I say never. I really do mean never.
I don’t even think I’ve ever even had a contact high.
Now that I’m older, I wonder what led me to stay so far away from the stuff and, more importantly, how can I use this knowledge to my benefit in keeping my own children drug-free.
I have come to the conclusion that there were 3 different role models that lead me down the drug free path.
First, there was the story of Len Bias.

Do you remember him? He was a basketball star from my home state who overdosed on cocaine after trying it for the “first time”. I put that in quotes because who knows if that is really true. Was that just something my mom said to scare me? All I know is that it worked. I didn’t want to die. That story stuck with me for a very long time.
Then there was the story of Richard Pryor setting himself on fire from freebasing crack cocaine.
I didn’t want to be set on fire. I wasn’t really sure what freebasing meant (still couldn’t tell you what it means) but it just reinforced my belief that drugs were very dangerous and only for crazy people.

So the lesson here is to find ways to scare your children into thinking that drugs will lead to imminent death or catching oneself on fire.
There was one other thing that I thought of that may have really sealed the deal for me. I think it was seeing this very influential New Kids on the Block poster in my most impressionable teenage years:

Hey if Joey and Jordan are in the drug-free zone, I’m right there with them. Now just ignore the fact they must have been smoking something to wear those ridiculous outfits. Donnie’s overall knickers and Jon’s ripped jeans with white tights underneath are clearly the result of someone under the influence.
Not me, though. I steer clear of the stuff.
The ironic thing is that I love a good drug song. My favorite right now is the M.I.A. song “Paper Planes” that keeps playing on the trailer for Pineapple Express (Dumb movie, btw, but I couldn’t help but think James Franco was hot as a drug dealer/stoner. I guess while we are on the subject, it may be a good time to mention that I also have a thing for drug guys in movies–Do I need to remind you of how hot Ryan Gosling looked in Half Nelson?).
So I have this song on my playlist and I can’t stop listening to it even though it is about drugs and killing and stealing. Obviously things I know nothing about.
Why do I love you drug songs? Why?
Here is a little Playlist I made up including the aforementioned song and a few others (in the genre) that I love:
***PLEASE NOTE: I am in no way endorsing or condoning the use of drugs in any way. I just like the music people make when they are high.

Got something to say?

I love the Paper Planes song, too! I’ll have to listen to it again because silly me I didn’t realize it was about drugs. I knew the movie was about drugs, but not the song! But whatever. And Kidrock’s new song I like a lot too! Good choices. This is so funny! I think I’m the same way (obviously since I like these songs) I will never do drugs, and this post reinforced that for me! haha Way to go!
Yup, me too! Never (seriously NEVER) touched any of it myself, but I love the songs. I think my favorite from your list is The Joker.
Too funny!! The NKOTB look ridiculous! I cannot believe we once dressed that way…you would have thought we were on drugs to get through the 80’s.
OMG, I totally remember that NKOTB poster. I’m also not a drug user, although I did smoke pot once in university. Didn’t like it so I went straight back to beer
I’m a Tom Petty fan and used to listen to Mary Jane ALL THE TIME. (While drinking beer).
Atleast NKOTB look darn fine now, so they made up for lost time.
I have never tried drugs or smoked ever..drinking is another story..ahem. Anyway it amazes me to this day when I do go out for a drink with friends; they are in shock that I’ve never even attempted to try and smoke.
Too funny!
I swear I don’t think I ever even noticed the “Drug Free School Zone” sign. Guess I was too busy looking at the boys. They do look a bit unhinged though, don’t they? I also find it a tad amusing since they weren’t nearly as innocent as they said they were. Oh well, they still inspired millions of girls to stay straight, so I guess I can forgive their youthful transgressions. It’s not as though they had much of a chance living the lives that they had thrust upon them….and they appear to have turned out ok in the end. Damned hot if nothing else, right?
I love how diverse your tastes are. Just one more reason to assume that we would get along famously if we ever met face to face.
Half Nelson is fantastic. While I agree, drugs are bad, Ryan Gosling made doing crack look pretty darn good….
Okay, that comment sounded sort of homo-erotic, I want to clarify I just meant his acting was fantastic and he deserved the Oscar that year.
Also, don’t do drugs.
I’m right there with you on the never trying drugs thing. Not sure why, just a control freak I guess (and overall good person
). I have never really drank either and never been buzzed, and at 29, I still don’t even have the desire to find out.
What, no Snoop Dog?
That was great! However, you totally forgot to mention Donny’s ( I think…maybe Mark?) I seriously can’t remember their names….HIDIOUS glasses. Did he borrow those from his blind-as-a-bat grandma? Seriously. I loved New Kids, but I totally forget who is who, because all that mattered was Joey.
James Franco is hot. Period. James Franco stoned/acting stoned is equally hot as well!
I stay clear of substance abuse context-related material…but Half Nelson is special..it’s awesome..and oh yes..Ryan’s hot..so :p
OK, you just incorporated a post with New Kids on the Block AND Kid Rock…you ROCK!!!
Know what scared me away from drugs? Regina dying in that Sweet Valley High book after she did coke for the first, only and last time. Yeah, I’m a dork.
Yeah, what is it about drug movies that lures us in? Your playlist cracks me up, you poser~
Oh yea I love that MIA song too. *Must*Remember*To*Download.
So, um, what the heck did I see in Donnie? FO REAL. I had a HUGE (Bigger than Luke Perry) crush on him. And I see that picture…and realize that all 13 year old girls must be certifiably insane.
I remember that poster! Used to love them.
I still rock to ‘Joker’ and other drug’ish’ songs, even though I’m a sober jane.
OMG. I can’t believe ‘real anti supermom’ brought up SVH because that scared me too.
This has been a great walk down memory lane.
Ha ha… I love the line, “I just love the music people make when they are high.” What a quote that is!
I was NKOTB fan myself… what were they thinking with those clothes??
I love the NKOTB pic. I’m actually going to see them in concert on October 19th
can’t wait! Happy POW
That is so funny- I like the disclaimer at the end. My husband was/is straight laced too. I always ask him how we can keep our kids on his path instead of mine (praise God, I never got too deep and am super straight laced now). He said something about NKOTB…
I can honestly say that I too never did drugs. I did however get a contact high unfortunately. And not with my friends, but with family. My brother and cousin did it a lot and I spent one Thanksgiving with them and that was all they did.
But anyways, my parents also actually smoked pot when we were little. We actually made them quit after going through the DARE program at school. So after telling them they shouldn’t do it I couldn’t see doing it myself.
Then there was my brother who would roll his joints on the kitchen table when my parents weren’t there. He’s two years older than me. Anyways, he’d go outside to smoke and then come back in and go to bed. I didn’t get the point of that. Get high, go to sleep. Hmmm, doesn’t seem like much fun to me.
My brother hasn’t made much of his life so he’s a perfect example of why not to start drugs because he has spent his life in trouble with the law, running from people, and totally broke and useless. So a pretty good example I think to the kids. You don’t want to end up like Uncle Dan.
