Movie Review Monday: Cloverfield

I’m a fan of LOST.  I’m not a crazy, obsessive fan but I do enjoy sitting down to see what Kate, Jack, Hurley and especially Sawyer (Oh my goodness is he hot!!) are up to on that crazy island of theirs.  This is one of the reason’s why I wanted to see the movie Cloverfield.  It was produced by J.J. Abrams, the creator of LOST.  It seemed to have gotten pretty decent buzz when it was out in theaters, and it was only about 88 min long so I figured it wasn’t a huge time investment if I hated it.

This movie was actually surprisingly entertaining.  I found myself completely engrossed in it from the opening scenes.

Here is a quick synopsis of the plot:   A giant monster attacks New York City.  Lots of buildings are knocked down.  Lots of people are eaten.  Sounds pretty pointless, right?  For some crazy reason, this movie totally works.  Let me tell you why.

For one, the entire movie is filmed using a handheld camera.  This was annoying at first, but after you get used to it, it actually adds to the making you feel as though you are really there and being chased by this monster.  If you didn’t like Blair Witch Project (I did, btw) because of this style of filming you will probably want to skip this one.  I think it was even shakier than that movie.

(Warning:  I’ve heard some people had issues with getting motion sickness while watching this movie.  I didn’t but I could see how someone more sensitive to this may.  It is very shaky and it pretty much lasts the entire movie.)

There is a little romance in the movie, but I have to say that was pretty cheesy.  The majority of the movie follows one of the characters and a few of his friends on his quest to save the love of his life who is trapped in her apartment in the middle of all the mayhem.   I don’t want to give away anything just in case you haven’t seen it, but I really think it is worth the watch.

I still do have one question–What the hell is a Cloverfield?  Is that the name of the monster?  Is that some hidden meaning of life?  If someone could enlighten me, please do so in the comments section below.

Here’s my “I’m too cheap for a Netflix Queue” list of movies I want to see next:

  • 27 Dresses
  • Charlie Wilson’s War
  • Cloverfield  – 4/5
  • There Will Be Blood
  • Walk Hard
  • Into the Wild
  • August Rush

My husband wants to see Cloverfield. The 2nd and 3rd Bourne movies were filmed that way, with the handheld camera, and it does bother me a bit. But we are Lost obsessed at our house and will support JJ’s other efforts. (And Sawyer is definitely H-O-T!)

I ADORED August Rush. I want the soundtrack badly. It was a sweet, beautiful movie. I’d never heard of Jonathan Rhys Meyers before and now I have a crush on him.

27 Dresses was much better than I expected.

I haven’t seen any of the others. We are movie rentin’ fools over here so I’ll let you know if we do.

I totally want to see it! I really really want to see Into the Wild and August Rush too. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a hottie — I’m addicted to The Tudors on Showtime.

      Thanks for stopping by today!
