Taboo Topics
There are a few topics that should never be talked about with friends: Politics, Religion and Money.
Well, friends, I’m going to tackle all three of them in one post.
First of all, let’s just talk politics. Everyone is buzzing about Sarah Palin’s speech last night at the Republican National Convention. Did you watch it?
It seems that I’m the only person in America who missed it. I have been reading a lot of the reaction to it and it sounds like, for the most part, she did well.
As a woman that makes me happy. As a mother, I’m still torn on the whole five kids thing. I would never question the amount of kids a male candidate has, so I know how hypocritical it is of me to do it for her. Yet, for whatever reason, I just can’t seem to get past it in my mind. I just know how frazzled I get with having two kids. I just can’t imagine juggling five and being the Vice-President of the United States. I know she was Governor and all, but now we’re adding to her already full plate the following: 49 more states, international affairs, and an unwed, pregnant daughter. I’m not saying anything bad about any of this, but put it all together and it seems like a recipe for a mental breakdown.
While I am trying to follow the presidential race closely, I just can’t bring myself to watch any of the convention speeches. It all seems so contrived to me. The debates, on the other hand, are not to be missed! I’m still undecided about who is going to get my vote, so I will definitely be tuning in to hear what they have to say. I love the fact that the candidates have to answer the questions right off the top of their heads. This is where they either fall flat on their face or rise to the challenge. I can’t wait to see who best handles themselves under pressure.
On a somewhat unrelated, but sort of related sidenote, the other reason that I didn’t watch the speech was that I was too busy enjoying the strange and wonderful movie Donnie Darko. This movie was a trip! I feel like I need to watch it again to completely understand it, but I think I’d recommend it for the most part. In my opinion, if you like the show LOST you would probably enjoy it.
This movie also managed to wake up the dormant crush that I had on Jake Gyllenhaal. I totally forgot how cute he could be.
Next topic, religion.
I just read a story about a Japanese monk in Tokyo who was trying to rid his temple of a hornets’ nest and he ended up burning the whole thing down because he dropped his torch when the bees attacked him. People are calling it Karma? What do you think? Do you believe in Karma?
And finally, money.
I happened across this website that tells you how much your blog is worth. Check this out:

My blog is worth $27,097.92.
How much is your blog worth?
That is pretty much the funniest thing I’ve seen all week. Here are the real numbers, if you must know:
Current amount of hours spent on my blog: 543,749
Current amount of money made from blogging: $0
I think there is something wrong with this picture. And I just feel like slapping that George Washington right across the face for mocking me with his crazy blog worth amount. How dare he put that out there to me?!! I wasn’t planning on “monetizing” my blog, but now that I see the potential I want to know how I can get my hands on some of this money. If you have any hints, let me know.
That’s all I have for you on the taboo topics. Now I’ll open the floor for discussion. Pretend you are part of a roundtable discussion, town hall meeting or some other important forum. Speak your mind. Tell us how you feel about Palin’s potential breakdown, Jake Gyllenhaal’s hotness factor, Karma and the elusive ways to make money from blogging. The floor is yours.

Got something to say?

Ok, the blog worth thing is GREAT! Mine is worth $35,001.48 … so when can I expect that windfall to arrive?! ~LOL~
And I’m like you with the convention speeches. ANYONE can sound good with a prewritten speech! The debates are what really show you the candidates’ true colors. I HAVE decided how I’m voting but I’ll still be listening in – that way I’ll know what to expect if my candidate loses.

I personally thought she was amazing. I’m not a republican (nor am I a democrat) but SP is a genuine person. Pre-written speech or not, she was outstanding. She’s done amazing things for Alaska (which, incidentally wasn’t a piece of cake state. There was so much corruption in office before she stepped in, and their budget was in complete shambles…)
I’ve seen DD but all I remember is the rabbit. I guess I should see it again, huh?

Ummm… my blog is worth $0.00. I’m going to go cry.
Donnie Darko is an awesome flick to watch over and over again, preferably drunk with the lights off. While reading a blog with no net worth. Then go rent October Sky and get your Jail Bait Jake fix. Actually, since you’re a fan of the beefcake, I’m sure you’ll drool over the ridiculously buff Jake in the upcoming Prince of Persia. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Prince-Of-Persia-Set-Pics-9794.html
Re: Palin, it’s not even just the five kids thing, it’s the combination of a four-month old with special needs and a teenager with a baby on the way. I’d say the same thing if it were a male candidate: you need to be home dealing with that, not applying for a job with a 24/7 travel schedule. Similarly, both the wife and I also thought Jon Edwards was an ass for kicking off his campaign while his wife had cancer, to say nothing of having an affair at the same time. There are times when your family needs you more than the country does, ya know?
Also, five kids is apeshit crazy. Nancy Pelosi’s also got 5 kids, but the youngest is 38. So does Mit Romney, and he is apeshit crazy.
I ain’t touching the karma thing, but someone needs to send the guy a can of Raid. Stuff works wonders.

Misty–I just edited the post to remove the remark I made about Alaska. I know nothing about how easy or hard the state would be to run. I just know I’d love to visit the place someday.
The rabbit was freaky in DD but it all ties together at the end. I think.
John–I think it is more the ages of her kids. If they were older, I think I’d feel more comfortable with the whole situation. So is the dad a stay at home dad?

I thought her delivery of the speech was great while she was talking about her life and background. It didn’t go as well, I didn’t think, when she moved into some of the policy stuff and at a couple of points she was a little more sarcastic that I would have liked to hear in her first speech in the national spotlight. The stylists had done a good job with her, I thought…the glasses and hair were much better. I was bothered by the five kid (special needs baby particularly) thing until I saw this morning that her husband stays at home. That made me feel better about it. Having said all that…I’ll still likely go with the Obama-Biden ticket.
Oh…I do kind of believe in karma or “what goes around comes around” or “you reap what you so” or whatever you want to call it. I’ve seen it in action quite a few times.

1. Trading Britney’s meltdowns for Palin’s could be a nice change of pace.
2. Never forget Jakes level of hotness, I’ve been all over that nugget since October Skies.
3. If I didn’t believe in karma before I do now.
4. Oh yeah, this blog has income written all over it. I was so sure you were cashing in, I’ve been looking for a subtle way to ask you for a money.
5. I’m pleased to announce my blog is worth $3,387.24. That should just about cover what I paid to have my header designed
6. Can I borrow 3,387.24 bucks (I have PayPal)

With the amount of time I’ve spent blogging lately, my blog should be worth millions. I didn’t bother looking.
Politics…yeah. best not to talk about it.
Karma..absolutely.
I like DD, but it’s been while since I watched it.

I actually tried watching Donny Darko before but I had to stop because the rabbit was freaking me out too much. I have a fear of mascots..so…yeah…it was a little too scary for me…which is sad cause I’ve heard the rave reviews that it’s received…

Oh I know who’d I be voting for. The US election gets so much airtime over here I am begining to think we should be offered a vote actually.
Love that you tackled all the taboo topics in one post.
I’m off to see how much by blog is worth and if it is anywhere close to yours I may well just sell it and move on with life.
So if I don’t come back you’ll know why and it’ll be all your fault.

Sarah Palin’s husband is a stay-at-home father? If so, that must be recent. He was a commercial fisherman and at one point they also owned a small business. He was actually away on business for three days when Sarah found out that Trig had down syndrome. She told him once he came home. Maybe once they found that out they decided Todd should stay at home. Not sure.
Also, I just read a quote from her that said neither her nor Todd told the four oldest children that their sibling was going to be born with downs. All four of the older kids were in the delivery room when Trig was born and the 15 year old daughter says, “He looks like he has down syndrome.” And that’s how the four oldest find out. Is that a little odd, or is just me? How do you not prepare and tell your four kids that their brother is going to be born with downs? I have a cousin who has downs so this topic is a little closer to my heart and I get a little more heated about it then.
And about Bristol, how, as a parent (mother or father) do you accept the VP candidate position knowing that your 17 year pregnant, unwed daughter is then going to be thrust into the national spotlight? I cant’ comprehend that. Is being the VP more important? I understand as women we want it all, but eventually you do have to make a choice. And sorry, but I believe she made the wrong choice. She chose to be a mother and therefore you then have to compromise your own life at certain times, and this is one of them. And do you know she would only support abstinence-only sex education programs in Alaska? Are you kidding me? We’re in the year 2008! And clearly, her daughter is a proven case that you need to teach and provde more than just abstinence. She also doesn’t believe in abortion in cases of rape or incest. And on top of that, she also doesn’t believe in supporting unwed mothers. So, then you’re not going to support the women who were raped and got pregnant through being molested b/c you won’t let them get an abortion? Way too extreme for me. Can’t we find a middle ground?
