hot-harry

Well, hello there Your Royal Hotness.  Yum!

I’ve got a huge crush on Prince Harry!  I’d go as far as saying that he might even be in my top five list.

I was going to make this entire post about him but decided to spare my readers who don’t see his appeal.  (Click here if you do see his appeal) Instead, I will just use him as the inspiration for this week’s theme:

SEXY REDHEADS!!

I have to say that there aren’t many out there in terms of celebrities so please keep this in mind as I present this very limited list.

Take a look and let me know who I missed:

Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy)

kevin-mckidd

Seth Green

Lynn Kegan

(Carpenter on Designed to Sell-HGTV)

Damian Lewis

(Life, Band of Brothers)

Eric Stoltz

  • Redheads:   Hot or not??
  • Who is the sexiest redheaded man on my list or otherwise?
  • What are the odds of me meeting Prince Harry in NYC this weekend?

Choose My Own Weight Loss Adventure

This past week wasn’t my best week.  Sadly, I must report a small gain.  :(

nathans-green-concert-002

It’s only .4 lbs, but it is still not the direction that I want to see the scale going.  I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised since I’ve been eating like eating is going out of style.  I’ll leave out all the delicious details, but let’s just say that I haven’t been watching my portions or making good choices with my food.

Hopefully, I can get myself back on track.

In the meantime, I want to announce the winner of the 6-Month Membership to Sensei for Weight Loss.   Congratulations to Brooke!!

The code for everyone else, good for 50% off of 1 month, is MISHMASH

This week I have the answers to the questions that you left for the nutritionist.  Let’s see what Nutritionist Renee Melton has to say about nighttime snacking, diet sodas, and much more…

Brooke asked:

My question for the nutritionist: does exercise affect blood sugar?

I’ve been getting light headed if i’m not able to eat within an hour of running. i have naturally low blood sugar (fasting in the 40s).

Exercise definitely affects blood sugar… and it sounds like you’re experiencing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) because of your running.  Glucose is the fuel for your body and comes from our bodies breaking down the foods we eat.  We either burn the energy right away or store whatever is excess.  During exercise, glucose moves from your bloodstream to the muscles. When you’re exercising you’re body is burning fuel at a faster rate.

Fortunately there are steps you can take to minimize your low blood sugar.  First, you should have a light meal an hour or two before you run.  Things like fruits, vegetables, cereals & breads are good choices, but avoid sugary or refined ‘white’ products (white rice, white bread).  If you need something quick, a yogurt and fruit smoothie can work well.  During your run, instead of plain water, use a lightly sweetened sports drink or diluted juice (75% water, 25% juice) to provide extra carbs (fuel).  Once your run is over, have a healthy snack that includes more carbs (like a glass of OJ and a couple crackers).  This will help replenish the glucose you’ve lost during exercise.

Jenn asked

My question is: Is the new Coke Zero and Pepsi O Calorie really good for you or should you just avoid soda all together?

Hi Jenn – I don’t think that anyone could ever say that diet soda of any kind is ‘good’ for you.  Certainly if you enjoy it, an occasional glass or can is fine.  But if you’re one of those people who drinks soda all day long, then you should make some changes.

While diet soda has been shown to be ‘safe’ to consume in moderate amounts and not contribute to cancer, it’s also come under fire in recent years for other reasons.  Some research suggests that the sweet taste triggers us to eat more calories.  In other words, it can keep your sweet tooth in overdrive leading you to eat more carbs.  There’s also been a possible link identified between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome (a combination of medical conditions which increase risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes), but more research is needed in that area.  Some people also experience GI distress (indigestion or feeling ‘gassy’) with long term or high soda use.

So, is it good for you, ‘no’, the issue that many are arguing right now is whether or not diet soda is ‘bad’ for you.

So what are good alternatives?  Well, if you’re really missing the soda, you could try a couple ounces of juice in a glass of sparkling water.  Other great options are cold water with wedges of lemon or lime or chilled green or black tea.  Now these are things that truly are ‘good’ for you!

Lindsay asked:

I want to make baby food instead of buying pre-made for my baby. Do you have any recipes that make for awesome, healthy baby food?

What a great idea, you can make sure that your baby is getting the best and freshest foods!  Babies have very sensitive taste buds, so seasonings and strong flavors aren’t necessary.  Sticking with plain foods is the best idea.  Once you know your baby tolerates individual foods, you can mix them to create new flavors.  Try mixing 2 favorite fruits or vegetables.

The most important things when making your own baby food is feeding age appropriate foods and food safety.  For some great recommendations, check out reliable websites, like www.pregnancy.org, and do a search for homemade baby food.  They can give you all the guidelines you need to make the healthiest and most nutritious food possible.

Yevette asked:

Is the new over the counter ali diet pill really good for you???

Alli blocks the digestion of some of the fat that you eat, meaning this fat passes out of your body undigested.  If you’re considering trying this, there are possible side effects you need to be aware of (taken from their website):  ‘gas with oily spotting’, ‘loose stools’, and ‘more frequent stools that may be hard to control’.  Pretty pleasant sounding, huh?  The more fat you eat, the more likely you are to have these side effects.  The Alli program is supposed to help you lose 1-2 pounds per week.

The bottom line is that you can lose 1-2 pounds per week by making small changes in your diet (similar to what you’d need to do if you took Alli), and adding a little more activity to your life.  Learning how to control portions and eat healthier can not only help you lose weight, but keep it off for good.  If you feel overwhelmed with the idea of doing it yourself, try a program with a little structure, like Sensei for Weight Loss, to help you get there in a healthy way.

And here is my question:

Does it really matter if you eat after 8pm or is it just the total amount of calories you have per day that matters?  For example if my goal is 1400 calories and I eat 1100 up until 8pm and I save the 300 for an evening snack is that going to hurt my chances of losing weight?

Eating after 8pm itself isn’t so much the problem.  The problem many ‘night time eaters’ have is that they don’t eat enough (or skip meals) during the day and eat most of their calories late at night.  Because they’re hungry, they’re far more likely to overeat.  Plus, as anyone who’s had a big meal before bedtime knows, it doesn’t exactly make for a restful night’s sleep!

Are you are eating at least 3 balanced meals throughout the day?  Do you feel satisfied (not getting too hungry) throughout the day?  If you can answer ‘yes’ to both of these questions, then eating 200-300 calories as snack a couple hours before bed shouldn’t be a problem.    But, if you’re feeling hungry during the day, I recommend moving at least some of those evening calories earlier in the day.

You can minimize the number of calories you need for your evening snack by picking low cal and high fiber foods.  Try things like veggies with low cal dressing or a little hummus, air popped popcorn, a slice of lite wheat bread with a thin slice of deli meat, or a whole grain (unsweetened) cereal with fat free milk.

A Quickie

I sat down tonight to write up a post and my thoughts are just all over the place, so bullet points it is.

  • Did you watch the Gosselin train-wreck?  I don’t even watch Jon and Kate Plus Eight on a normal basis, but like a bug to a bright light I just couldn’t resist tonight’s episode.  I tuned in and after it went off I couldn’t help but feel completely sick to my stomach.  No one really knows for sure what the heck is going on but they are either great actors or having some serious marital problems.  The body language and awkward silent treatments were just so painful to watch.  It seems pretty evident at this point that Jon did cheat.  I know that he is denying it but you can pretty much read between the lines.  Who really knows though?   If it is true and they are going to deal with it on the show, I’m kind of surprised by that.  I can’t imagine that anyone would want to air their dirty laundry on purpose, but then again anything is possible when it comes to greed.  I just can’t see how this is at all healthy for the kids?  And since Kate says that she does everything for her kids, I’m thinking that there is some kind of hypocrisy going on here.  I’m sure the ratings for this episode were through the roof, so you have to guess that is their motivation for staying on tv.   My heart just breaks for the kids.  They didn’t sign up for any of this.  The whole thing is just so sad.    I’d love to hear your thoughts on this show if you watch.
  • I finally finished The Host this weekend.  It took me a really long time to get into this book.  I would say it wasn’t until about Chapter 13 (over 100 pages in) that I was hooked.  Normally I would just give up on a book after that many chapters, but my whole neighborhood read it and said they liked it more than Twilight so I just had to stick with it.  Once the story got going, it was FANTASTIC!!   Did I like it more than Twilight?  No, I can’t say that I did, but  I highly recommend this book!  It is such a unique and compelling tale.  There is romance, adventure, suspense…everything you could want in a book.  I couldn’t put it down!  I have to give Stephenie Meyers credit where credit is due.  That woman sure does know how to tell a story and create characters that you come to love.   If you haven’t read it, definitely check it out.   If you have read The Host, let me know what you thought of it in the comments.
  • The JoeyTotes coupon code ( mishmash09 ) will be expiring at the end of May.  Don’t miss out on your 10% discount.
  • Finally, I wanted to say that I won’t be around much for the next month.  I am starting a new job until the end of the school year so blogging is going to have to be put on the back burner for the moment.  I have a  few possible guest posts lined up and I’m still hoping to pop in every so often.  I just can’t say how much at this point.  I hope you understand and will stick with me during this sporadic posting period.

Friday Eye Candy: Sexy Sci-Fi Summer

I was having a hard time coming up with a theme idea for this week’s eye candy.  I think I was still in a daze from yesterday’s Gos-Watch post (make sure to click if you missed it).

Luckily Jean came to my rescue.  She emailed me the following list of sexy Sci-Fi guys (plus a few more that I added) and I think you will be quite pleased.

From the new Star Trek movie…

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto

Wow, those eyes are gorgeous!!  Captain Kirk never looked so good!!

As Jean says, not too shabby minus the vulcan ears.

As far as the actual movie is concerned, she commented, “Last weekend I (was dragged) went to see Star Trek the new movie and though it was not on my top movie watching list, it indeed made up for it with the hotties involved.”

If Star Trek isn’t your thing, Jean has a couple of other options for you.

Next up from the movie Wolverine...

Hugh Jackman

Also in Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds

How about some Transformers hotties?!?!?!

Shia LaBeouf and Josh Duhamel

Last, but definitely not least…our favorite hot-head from Terminator Salvation

Christian Bale

  • Who is your favorite of the sexy Sci-fi guys?
  • Do you like Science Fiction movies?
  • Have you or are you planning to see any of the movies on today’s list?

Thanks to Jean for coming up with this week’s theme idea!!  Remember, if you would like to see your list of hot guys featured or if you have a good idea for a theme, please email me at dailymishmash (at) gmail (dot) com.

GosWatching: A High Risk Sport

Stalking Ryan Gosling isn’t for the faint of heart, I tell ya.  And I would know.  If my SVT comes back, then you know who is to blame.

These recent photos of him (on the set of Blue Valentine) nearly made me go into cardiac arrest.  Sometimes I’m even taken by surprise at the level of hotness that this man can reach.

There are so many great photos pouring in that I can hardly stand it.  I literally had to catch my breath and walk away from the computer a few times when working on this post.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

valentine-ry8

Oh what I wouldn’t give to be this girl in the striped shirt.  I would love to have him look at me with those sex eyes.   I don’t even really know what that means, but that is what they are.  Sex eyes.

valentine-ry14

This “in action” shot of him putting on his jacket is just scrumptious.   Look at those muscles.  Ugh.

valentine-ry111

Note:  The death stick in his mouth is about the only thing that I can think of that is a turn-off for me, but his other sexy qualities totally outweigh the smoking.  Plus, I know that it is just a nervous habit to take him mind of a certain girl with the initials R.M.  That is my theory anyway.

Finally, can I just say how much I am looking forward to this movie.   At first, I wasn’t too thrilled when I found out that Michelle Williams was his co-star.  I’ve since had a change of heart.  I’ve decided that he has proven that if he can make a romance with a doll (Lars and the Real Girl) plausible, it really doesn’t matter who his leading lady will be.  The man is so talented and sexy that every scene he ever does is golden.

This scene alone will be worth the $10 admission price. ..

Here is a whole gallery of great Gos-shots for your viewing enjoyment:

Guess the Cute Pooper Scooper

I know this is going to sound really weird, but I have to admit that I didn’t really have a crush on this sexy celeb until I saw these photos of him scooping up his dog’s poo.

There is just something incredibly hot about a responsible pet owner (It doesn’t hurt that he is wearing a snug fitting hoodie).

Organized Home Giveaway

When I first started blogging, I would often write about my quest to have a more organized home.  I would take before and after photos and document my progress.

It was riveting, I know.  I’m sure my new readers are kicking themselves for missing out on all that excitement.  (Hopefully you are picking up on the sarcastic tone.)

Soon I became bored of these types of posts (as they usually didn’t include photos of Ryan Gosling) and haven’t really been doing very well with my quest.

You know how some people have OCD and everything has to be in its place at all times.  Well, I have the opposite of that.   The problem is that I can live with clutter and it doesn’t bother me.  At least I don’t think that it is bothering me, but then when I take the time to clean and organize it makes me feel so wonderful that I realize how much the clutter was weighing down on me. I’m not sure if there is a clever acronym for this disease but I know that I have it.

I was recently contacted by Julie Verleger from Organized Home, Inc about doing a review for her virtual organizing services.  This was just the push I needed to get back into the swing of things and start tackling some problem areas in my home.

She asked me to send a list of my trouble spots.  The list was long but we narrowed it down to two small areas.  Then I sent her the photos:

organization-001

organization-002

I was afraid that Julie would run from her computer screaming at the disaster that was my pantry, but she emailed me back right away and didn’t call me a disgusting slob.  I knew right away we would get along nicely.

The second area that we agreed to attack was underneath the tv in the basement.  This is where my son (the video game junkie) keeps all his gear.

organization-003

This area wasn’t nearly as bad as the pantry but I have been thinking that I need to something about it for awhile now.

Julie set up a time that was convenient for both of us and gave me a call so we could discuss the problem areas and begin to troubleshoot ways to tackle them.  She had so many great ideas and suggestions for me.  I told her that my budget was very small and she helped me to find solutions that would stay within it.

Would you like to see the amazing transformation?  I know you do.

The New and Improved Pantry:

organization-0011

Here is a close-up of the floor, which was the biggest disaster area.  I bought a new grocery bag holder and a new onion potato stacker and that really helped.

organization-0031

As for the snack shelf, Julie suggested that I buy large basket for snack type items and this has been extremely helpful.  When I’m packing lunches, I just pull out the basket and take out what I need for lunch and then put it back.  It is such a time saver.  Since packing lunches is one of my dreaded chores, I am always looking for ways to make it less torturous (note: I have no idea why I despise packing lunches but I look forward to the day when I can tell my kids that they have to do it for themselves.  Is 9 too young for this?)

organization-0021

Here is the Clutter Free Entertainment Cabinet:

organization-0041

So where did all the wires and video game miscellaneous go?  I bought these two stacking baskets:

organization-005

Would you like to try out Julie’s virtual organizing services?  Here is what it entails:

Julie will provide a customized plan and guidance to create efficiency and beauty in any of your spaces.

Gotta mess? Gotta Story to go with it?

Julie is giving a personal organizing package to one lucky reader.  All you have to do is leave a comment telling us about your clutter disaster. Choose one space in your house that you would like to organize and tell us about it.    If you are chosen as a finalist, we will ask you to send us photos of the space and then one lucky winner will receive the personal organizing package from Julie of  Organized Home inc.

Friday Eye Candy: Taurus Men

**If you haven’t yet had your list of guys (or girls) featured on Friday Eye Candy or if you have a great idea for a theme, please send me an email with your picks:   dailymishmash (at) gmail (dot) com.  **

Let’s take a look at the men who were born under the sign of Taurus:

Taurus, the second Sign of the Zodiac, is all about reward. Unlike the Arian’s love of the game, Taureans love the rewards of the game. Think physical pleasures and material goods, for those born under this Sign revel in delicious excess. They are also a tactile lot, enjoying a tender, even sensual, touch.  Taureans are very strong-willed and often quite creative.  Hunky Taurus is physically strong and solidly built. Many favor weight lifting or other body-building routines to keep in shape and enjoy sports requiring strength and endurance.  Compatible with Capricorn and Virgo.

This and That

A few things running through my mind and if your tivo didn’t record LOST or Idol last night, you may want to skip this post because there are spoilers ahead…

  • I was shocked by last night’s Idol.  I really thought it was going to be a Danny vs Adam finale.

I’m not saying that I think Kris is less talented or doesn’t deserve his spot because we voted for the guy a ton of times over the past few months.  He’s definitely the favorite in our house, but I just thought that Danny had a huge fan base (like Adam).  Now that Danny is out, I have to wonder if Kris might have real potential to actually win the whole thing.  Logic says that most of Danny’s voters will be more into Kris’ style than Adam.  It should be an exciting finale next week.

Who do you want to win American Idol?

  • LOST is always a mindtrip, but last night’s episode totally took the cake.  My favorite part-and I think maybe one of my favorite scenes ever on the show-was when they showed Bernard and Rose living a happy retired life in the jungle.  I just loved how annoyed they were to see Kate, Juliet, and Sawyer show up.  Then Rose has this awesome line–

“It’s always something with you people. … We traveled back 30 years in time and you’re still trying to find ways to shoot each other?

Then there was the whole unveiling of the Jacob character.  I don’t know about you but I expected him to look a whole lot creepier than he did.   I mean with his scary cabin in the woods and the way Ben feared him, I just expected more of a freak factor.  (I’m thinking Twin Peaks or Children of the Corn freaky, not the Little House on the Prairie/Touch by an Angel/Waltons looking guy they chose.)  Unless, of course he is supposed to represent God or an angel, but then why the creepy cabin in the woods?  I’m so confused.

What did you think of LOST’s season finale?

  • I just read the Martin Scorcese will direct “Sinatra,”  a film  telling Frank Sinatra’s life story.  The internet is speculating that Leonardo DiCaprio will get the role and I think that would be an excellent choice (except for the fact that I’ve never heard Leo sing).   I’ve also read a few plugs for Harry Connick Jr. and James Franco.

leo-sinatrajames-sinatraharry-sinatra

Who do you think could pull off this roll?
