A Wedding Story

Supermommy is doing a wedding meme this week, and although I really do NOT love my photos (this is an understatement) I’m going to be a good sport and share them anyway.

I think one of the reasons I have such disdain for my photos is that they remind me of the person who took them.

We have not-so-fondly nicknamed our photographer the “Camera Nazi”.

He was very intrusive and loved the staged shots.  I don’t have a problem with a few staged photos, but when I specifically tell the guy that I do not want a backdrop and he brings one anyway, let’s just say I went a little Bridezilla on him.

I took photos of my album instead of scanning them in so the quality isn’t that great, but you’ll get the idea.

We’ll start with the basic church photo.  We got married in a Catholic church but didn’t have a Mass.  At least I don’t think we did.  Oh my gosh, I can’t even remember at this point.  It’s been almost 12 years, so some details escape me.

I’m lucky I still remember the date.  It was July 13, 1997.

The day was such a whirlwind from beginning to end.  I just remember feeling very rushed and not really being able to breathe at some points.  Other people have told us they loved the wedding and had a fun time so I guess that is all that matters, but I do wish that I had been able to relax and enjoy the day a little more.

You know how in most weddings there is always one thing that goes wrong?  Well, at least that has been the case in the weddings I’ve been in.  For example, my friend Tonya got all the way to the church which was about twenty minutes from her house and realized we forgot to put the flowers in the limo.  My friend Kate’s DJ didn’t show up to her wedding (luckily they were able to find a replacement at the last minute).

Well, my wedding “oops” wasn’t as major (thankfully).  My dress had a detachable train and halfway through the ceremony it fell off.  I sat down on my chair for the readings and when I got back up to say my vows, the train stayed on the chair.  I was horrified, but looking back on it now it kind of cracks me up.

The other thing about our wedding day that wasn’t exactly ideal was the temperature.  Obviously, we took the chance that it would be hot with a July wedding in Maryland, but it really was a scorcher.  It could be an urban legend, but I hear it may have gotten up to 116 degrees that day.  (Snopes says this is false and it actually only got up to 104.)

Did I mention that the limo’s air conditioning was broken?

The reception was at a hall called The Top of the Bay.  I chose this place because I wanted something that was on the water.

Here’s a random fact:  I wanted to be married or have my reception on the water ever since 1987 when I watched the wedding of Patch and Kayla on Days of Our Lives.

Our first dance was to “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams because that was our first dance ever.  Our last dance song was “Have I Told You Lately” by Rod Stewart.  We were announced by U2’s “One” because it is not the best song to dance to and is not really a romantic song, but it is “our song” and we wanted it included somehow.

All in all, it was a wonderful day.  If I had it to do over again, there would be a lot of things I would change, but the most important thing-my choice of groom-would stay exactly the same.

To see all the wedding posts and join in on the fun, head over to SuperMommy’s place.

Because I’m a linky whore, I’m also posting this at Wordful Wednesday too.

Oh my gosh! I’m still sort of giggling about Patch and Kayla…I had to sneak over to my friend’s house to watch that show!!

I’m glad you had such a great day despite the mishaps and the staged photos…you do look beautiful. And happy. :)

Patch & Kayla!! I so remember that…and I was 6! Do you know they came BACK to Days a few years ago? I haven’t watched it much in the last 4 years, but I have seen them on there.

You were an absolute beautiful bride, and despite the mishap with the detachable train, your dress was lovely!

    I loved hearing about your wedding… :)

Awwwwwwwwwwww, but, but you’re a beautiful bride. Golly, I haven’t watched Days of Our Lives in decades.

My Wordful is posted now. Thing is, the photos aren’t of good quality this time since I had to photograph them through the dining room window.

    Happy Wednesday to you.

My photographer and my wedding coordinator got in a fight over my bridesmaids sitting for a picture….
    WC- “Those dresses will wrinkle”
Photog- “My pictures will last longer than this wedding… they’re sitting”

And the videographer was setting up and caught the whole thing on video…. classic!

What a wonderful recap of your special day. No air condo in the limo? I’d die. I laughed when I saw your detachable train on the chair, but hey, I’m sure you felt lighter up there! :)

    Great photos!

What a beautiful dress! You both look so happy.

You know, I was NOT happy with my photographer either. He left out SO many shots that I wished he would have gotten. For instance there is no nice photo of just me and my mother together. My mother for Gosh sakes! Makes me quite upset to think about it actually. But of course, I still love my wedding day! : )

Thanks for sharing yours with us too…

That’s really sweet about the groom staying the same.
    ;)
I feel the same way; my wedding would be totally different {we got married when I was barely 22…I wish I had seen more weddings} but I’m still head over heels in love with my husband.

Oh not a camera nazi! Your pics are still lovely.

We didn’t get any official traditional staged pics and I kind of wish we had now in hindsight.

I love wedding photos. I totally wish I could go back in time and re-do my wedding. Make it more around what my husband and i would have liked. I was 18 when we got married.. I’m totally doing a 20 year vow renewal. I would have said a 10 year one, but that’s next year and that is in no way enough time to convince my husband.

I used to love that Bryan Adams song!
You made a gorgeous bride….even with the detachable train incident.

So sorry I’m late for your wedding darling! When I skimmed through my pictures on my reader I knew the Days reference would kill me. You are so funny. I guess the song thing is really kind of important, I really didn’t give it any thought at all, obviously.

thanks so much for having us Jen, I had a great time.

    I’m thinking about doing a post for SuperMommy’s linky…

My photographer went to the wrong church. Thankfully, my unlce was still at my parents house to answer the phone when she called the house… and he was able to direct her to the right place!
