Back to School Randomness
-I found out on Friday that my kids’ school will not being airing Obama’s message to the students tomorrow. The principal doesn’t feel like dealing with any parental complaints.
Complaints about what? I am so confused about the controversy about this speech.
So, of couse I had to see for myself. I just finished reading the speech in full and was totally on the lookout for all the secret, evil messages encrypted in there. I am here to report that it is just a pretty straight-forward, inspirational message that might actually make kids work harder and try to do their best this year. The horrors!!!
I truly hope that most of the country’s schools will watch it. If you were one of the people worried about the speech being political brainwashing, you can see it for yourself here, but I saw nothing that should be of concern to anyone. If there is anything that I missed, feel free to enlighten me in the comments because I’m really wondering why there is so much fear concerning this message.
(In case you were wondering, I would have no problem with the former President Bush addressing my children. I trust the president even if I don’t happen to agree with every single thing that he stands for. I also believe that when the president of the United States of America speaks that it is our patriotic duty to stop what we are doing and listen. And that is what I want to teach my children so we will be watching the speech tomorrow night together and discussing it as a family.)

-I may be light on my posting and commenting this fall because in addition to working two days a week, I have decided to go back to school. I’m taking a grad class to get re-certified to start teaching again. I’ve only had one class but I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far. I forgot how much I loved school and learning. It is such a different experience being a mature (well for the most part) adult and being a student. I feel like my motivation is totally intrinsic and not about getting a degree or a grade. I want to learn how to be a better teacher. I want to soak up as much knowledge as I can.
The only part that is freaking me out a bit is writing papers. It has been thirteen years since I’ve been in college and I kind of forgot how to write anything other than a silly blog post about Ryan Gosling’s muscles.
Most recent photo of Ryan Gosling’s muscles:
Do you think my professor will mind if I throw a Ryan Gosling pic in my first paper? Do you think she will give me extra credit? It is a woman so I highly doubt she would find it offensive.

-Here’s an awkward story… I’m standing there at the bursar’s office trying to pay for my class (which HOLY CRAP why didn’t anyone tell me how expensive Grad school was going to be before I went and signed up??). I see this guy walk by me and he looks so familiar. At first I think, wow that guy looks like Asher Roth. Asher Roth is so cute.
Then it hits me. The guy looks familiar because I taught him my first year of teaching when I had him in fourth grade about twelve years ago. Now he is about six foot two and looks a lot like Asher Roth (and a little like Ryan Gosling which is just WRONG on so many levels).
In case you were wondering, he did recognize and say hi to me.
Awkward doesn’t even begin to explain this whole story so I will just stop writing now.

I know I agree with you I think it crazy not to have your children watch the speech. Good luck going back to school.

My best friend is teaching 5th Grade this year (she’s a new teacher)… and was horrified that tons of parents in our district are threatening to pull their children out of school because they school *may or may not* be showing the President’s message.
The school won’t confirm or deny because they want to have time to review it first.
I? Just want to tell everyone to grow up.

Congrats on going back to school – that is great!

Good for you on going back to school. I am toying with the idea of going for my masters now that I finished my Bachelors (after being away for 6 years from school). We’ll see. Student loans are a pain in the butt and I wouldn’t want to tack on anymore of those…

I just read the speech and I agree with you all kids should get to hear it in school.
I dont even have children but if I did I would not be complaing that my child was exposed to that speech, I would complain because they were NOT exposed to it and the President.

I read the presidents speech yesterday and I didn’t see anything wrong with the speech itself. I was a little upset with the time…. noon? Sorry, did no one in Washington go to school? I’m thinking as a kid, I would have been upset that my lunch time had been screwed with. Personally, I would have preferred it to be at night, at home with the family to have a family discussion afterward. I, also, found the speech too long for young kids. There’s no way a young primary grade student is going to sit still to listen to that. It could have been cut waaaay down. I know of schools in the city where Iive that don’t have luxuries of tv or internet in the schools so they would have missed out anyway. Sad, but true. At least if it had been in prime time, a family with out internet could have watched it on TV. And the families without either, could have caught it in a public forum. And I agree, we should listen to speeches given by out elected leader.
Good luck with school! I know you are very excited!

There was a letter from the principal in Princess Nagger’s backpack on Friday about the speech today – with a form to fill out/sign if the parents do not want their kids watching the speech. I still don’t know what the brouhaha is all about. Apparently PN won’t be seeing it today, though, because the letter also said that the elementary kids won’t see it today, they’ll see it on another day after the administrators have a chance to view it first. I guess it’s their version of a ‘time delay’.
Good for you going back to school! I’d love to see you put a picture of RG in your first paper and see if the teacher appreciates it or has a sense of humor…
Happy RTT!

OMG – where in the hell have I been to miss out on the muscles Ryan Gosling seems to have acquired?! It just seems wrong after seeing him scrawny in so many movies lol

Don’t worry about being able to write a paper– most times it is just like a post, but on a different subject.
I don’t know what all the fuss is about the speech. The fact alone that the President is speaking to our youth should be praised, but so many people just want to complain. My guess is that this wouldn’t happen when those parents were the same age as their children are.

Holy moly… there ought to be a warning on pics like that. One that warns you of not being able to have any coherent thoughts after viewing. Wowza.
Congrats and good luck on your new adventure!

Good luck with your class and writing papers. Too funny about your former student… : )

Congrats on going back to school! I am curious as to why you had to go back to school though?? Is it because you are in a different state that has different requirements? Just wondering because I didn’t have to in order to go back this Fall and I had been out of it for 5years…

#1…I think the whole thing is utter and SICK insanity…I wrote a letter in protest to my school system for NOT airing the speech today. My boys and I watched it at home this afternoon.
#2…WOW nice pic…great development on the muscle front…where have I been?!?!
#3… HILARIOUS about you running into former student. I am a former tchr as well and feel my oldest when I see how old my former students are now! (my first class of 3rd graders is in college this year!)
#4…I understand, I recently completed the credits for my masters and felt rusty on the whole paper writing thing but it was fine…. besides your posts ARE writing….and I would throw in a pic or two just like that one for good measure….

That’s totally ridiculous about the speech. HUH?
In other news, I will miss you, but I’m jealous of you taking classes. I need to do that! I hope you have a wonderful fulfilling fall!

i think it’s a cute story.
I agree whole heartedly. I am not the biggest bush fan, nor am I a big advocate for the Obama camp but I was disappointed that Gen’s school didn’t air it so we watched it on youtube. The entire thing has been ridiculous and moderately embarrassing for Americans.

Back to school and working? Wow! You go!
As far as Obama’s speech to schools…I will be honest. If I had a child who was school age and attending public school, had the lesson plan that was to accompany the speech not been retooled and certain things taken out, I would have pulled said child I don’t have in school right now, out. It smacked a little too much of indoctrination rather than education. It’s all good now though. Whilst I have not been a fan of ANY administration since 1992, and am definitely not in Obama’s camp, (I’m not in anyone’s really…) I think that his speech was spot on. Education is VITAL. I think more POTUS’ should endeavor to make this kind of speech a priority on a yearly basis.

Umm hello Ryan Gosling’s muscles…want to touch!

P.S. (I am queen of the P.S. tonight aren’t I? I always think of something else to tell you after I comment, lol)
In regards to the past student incident, I am reminded of that old ‘Oil of Olay’ commercial where the teacher says…” I was your teacher”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqWxGMqI_SE
That would have been pretty darn funny if you had reinacted that, but the kid probably wouldnt have gotten the joke!
