Close Encounters of the Celebrity Kind: Day #2

Thanks to everyone who has posted a link. I’m having so much fun reading them.
You don’t want to miss out on these great celebrity encounter stories:
- Katelin met Pacey (Joshua Jackson). I swear this girl has a celebrity magnet attached to her! She also met Ryan Gosling, in case you missed it. Lucky duck!
- Angie met one of my other crushes, River Phoenix.
- Julie met Cam Giganget and some other members of the Twilight cast.
- Shannon didn’t exactly meet Justin Timberlake but she has an awesome story about how he followed her on Twitter. MUST READ!!
- Shannon got up close and personal with the guys from NKOTB.
- Keely possesses an anti-celebrity aura. Her story of NOT meeting David Duchovny is probably funnier than if she actually had met him.
Hopefully more people will join in on the fun. If you’ve got a story to share, make sure you post your link below.

Today’s celeb encounter is one of my favorites. The celebrity in question isn’t the biggest star on the planet but it was really exciting to see him for two reasons.
First of all, it was a chance encounter. For once, I wasn’t hunting down my famous prey. This time he came to me. Well, not exactly, but he was staying at the same hotel we were staying in and I didn’t even know it when I booked it.
We were in New York for the weekend in the fall of 2003. We were doing a self-guided tour of all the sights in the movie Serendipity (yes, I know I’m a huge dork). We hit the Waldorf Astoria, Central Park and of course the restaurant itself.

I thought for sure we were going to run into either Kate Beckinsale, or better yet John Cusack. Alas, we had a totally unrelated sighting that weekend.
We had just checked into our hotel and were walking through the lobby when we noticed a very familiar face walk up to the front desk.
It was none other than Rudy/Goonie/Hobbit boy himself: Sean Astin!!! I had a little crush on him way back in the day and I thought he was absolutely HILARIOUS in 50 First Dates.
Of course I started freaking out because it was a completely unexpected sighting. I was almost hyperventilating I was so excited. Luckily, my friend Kate was more calm, cool and collected. I’m guessing she probably said something like, “Girl, get it together.” I don’t remember the specifics, but the important thing is that she went up to him and asked if he would mind taking a picture with me.
He was really sweet from what I remember. There wasn’t a ton of conversation but I ended up with this photo that I will always cherish:

Cool! I would have seriously had to surpress the urge to chant “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy” if I had seen him. I’m impressed by your restraint! LOL!
BTW, I sent you a quote request for Disney today. Just in case the name didn’t seem familiar.

These have been so fun to read!
I’ve never met any famous person… sigh. My mom once met Eric Estrada… you know, the guy from CHiPS? And it was at Disney World, of all places!

New York is a great place to “run into” celebs. On my trip there in college I brushed up against Oscar de la Renta at a fashion show, saw Shirley McClaine at the HUGE Crate & Barrel store out there and saw several celebs walking into the daytime Emmy’s. That pretty much rounds out my celebrity encounters! : )

Seeing Sean Astin was a GREAT way to start that trip off!! The first of many fun NYC trips
I don’t have a blog, so I don’t think I can enter info into your link above, so I’ll just tell you one of my celebrity sightings, or wait, two actually. The first was Billy Bob Thorton at the Orioles game. He threw out the first pitch and at the end of the game I ran into him on the club level, went up to get his autograph and also gave him a kiss on the cheek
I know, everyone is thinking, “ewwww”! But I had been drinking, and just couldn’t help myself – he was also very flirtatious – I know, shocker. He’s also shorter than I thought, I literally think he’s only 5′6″. My 2nd celebrity sighting is at a rental car place in LA. We were waiting in line to get our car and the other person in line is the guy from the TV show Friday Night Lights. Can’t remember his name, but he’s the quarterback that replaced the original quarterback after he blew out his knee. He was a really nice guy. From Chicago, currently lives in Austin. Very friendly, very shy too – a nice kid. Oh, and then when I was younger I saw the guy from Empty Nest (I loved that show!) standing in the corner of the LAX airport.

[...] encounters are the ones that aren’t planned and that take you by surprise. This happened one other time in my life and it was so exciting. I like to use the Bengal Tiger metaphor. If you saw one at the zoo, [...]
