Earth Day Giveaway: JoeyTotes
Update: This contest is now closed and the winner has been chosen. Thanks to everyone who entered.
Over the past couple of years, I have been doing a lot to “green” our family and household. I’ll be the first to admit that part of it may have had something to do with the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio asked me to do it.

Because how can you really say no to Leo when he asks you to do something? There really isn’t anything that I would refuse that man.
Anyway, one of the many changes that I made was to purchase a set of reusable shopping bags.
I bought them at the Dollar Store and put them in my van so that I would always have them with me.
Well, guess what? I hardly ever remember to take them with me into the store.
You know when I do remember? (Of course you do because I’m willing to bet that you’ve done the same thing.) It is when I get up to the check-out counter and have half my cart unloaded on the belt.
When the clerk asks, “Paper or plastic?” I answer “plastic” and then hang my head in shame. As the clerk places my groceries into the evil blue bags of death, I can’t help but feel like a selfish, earth-killing loser.
Before I leave the store, I take a quick peek out the door to make sure I don’t see Leo in the parking lot because there is no way that I am meeting him for the first time pushing a cart full of plastic. Absolutely not!
Well JoeyTotes has solved this problem by creating an alternative to those pesky, easy to forget $.99 bags. Their bags are designed to be convenient to remember because each bag has an over-sized pouch that is sewn into the inside seam so you can carry multiple bags in one convenient pouch.

I was given the opportunity to try a set and I am in LOVE!! Not only are they very well made and hold a lot, but they are also machine washable. The best part about them is that they fit easily in my purse, so I haven’t forgotten them once.
Giveaway!!
Would you like to win a set of JoeyTotes?
-All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one thing you have done to try to be more environmentally conscious (“green”). If you haven’t done anything to help save the earth but still want to win a set, that is fine. Just tell me why you would like to win or how sexy you think Leo is on a scale of 1-10. It doesn’t really matter. I just enjoy reading comments so try to say something interesting. ![]()

-Lastly, help me to promote this giveaway. Tweet, Stumble or post about this giveaway for additional entries. Just make sure that you leave me the link in a separate comment each time you promote.

Sounds like a neat product. We have really made a big effort to recyle more of our trash – especially all the paper/cardboard/cans – things our food and drinks come in.
And, Leo….definitely a 10++
We compost our organic waste, buy second-hand clothes, use cloth napkins, do not have grass, use cfl bulbs, and only shower once a week. Ok, we shower more than once a week…
so cool!
It must be late? I can’t think of what to write to say that we do that is “green” – we do lots… I know we do!
We pass around clothes to friends and to thrift stores… we recycle paper, aluminum and plastics… we use the cfl bulbs too…
you get the picture!
Thanks again!
I’ve been trying to be more earth friendly in many ways. I have the ugly reusable bags from the grocery store. I have the spiral light bulbs. I turn off the water when possible. I wash most things in cold now. We try to make fewer trips with more stops. I try to eat out as much as possible so I don’t use the stove at home. I’m a giver, that’s what I am.
Yes, I subscribed.
And I totally tweeted: http://twitter.com/tammigirl/status/1582887705
Wow, this site is great! Will add to my rss reader list. Very innovative. Ralph
I have been turning off lights, computers, etc when we’re not using them (That’s big in our house). I, too, have the reusable shopping bags and I, too, forgot to bring them with me. SHAME ON ME!!! I WANT to start recycling…I really do.
Oh….how I wish I were that baby polar bear in that pic! Leo is a good 9 for me. I like that he’s getting more handsome the older he gets.
I’m going to TWEET about your giveway. I’m already a subscriber (b/c I love this blog)
We are recycling everything possible at our house and teaching the kids to do so too. We recently stopped accepting paper or plastic bags at the store and bring our own totes. Would love to win these bags. And I think Leo is a 10! Intelligent, thoughtful and hunky–what a combo.
Your blog feeds to my google reader (user name: rubymoonstone at gmail)
I’m trying to use less paper plates and paper towels. We’ve changed to CFL bulbs. And I also try to remember to take my reuseable bags to the grocery store!
P.S… I wouldn’t refuse Leo, either… if you know what I mean.

Great giveaway!
I am a reusable bag addict. I buy them where ever I go…….is it me or are they just getting cuter and cuter? I just have to have them all!
I try to save water by putting off doing laundry as long as possible….well my initial intent may not be to save the planet but every little bit helps, right?
I do actually take advantage of recycling our plastics, newspapers and aluminum cans. Thank God for curbside service!
I am of course, a faithful subscriber!
I’ve been really good this year in remembering to bring my reusable bags into the grocery stores.
Please enter me in the drawing. I’ve been recycling since before it was “green” (just cuz I wanted to lower my trash bill, frankly), turning off lights and washing laundry in cold water since forever (that pesky utility bill), and using reusable bags/totes since I was a kid (because I spent 9 years in Europe as an Army brat and that’s just what the Germans did when I was on the economy).
You haven’t lived until you’ve watched an elderly woman tote a GORGEOUS wicker basket with a fabric liner and cover around to all the downtown shops to pick up her bread, her meat, and her knitting supplies.
That said, big wicker baskets are great when you’re 80, but not so great when you’re hauling a toddler around. I’d love to try out these sacks – they sound perfect for the diaper bag!!!
I too have bought the re-usable bags from Whole Foods and use them when grocery shopping.
Give away clothes rather than discard them, buy at thrift shops as much as possible, use metal bottles for water rather than plastic, use totes rather than plastic bags when shopping(when I remember to grab then, that is — oops), recycle cans, glass, plastic and paper. As for Leo, an 8 — I’m almost old enough to be his mother so it would be nearly sick to see him as sexier, but understand why others do;-)
Peace. ~~~mary
My family does alot of “green” things. First, we recycle everything we possibly can. We even recycle children’s clothes. We have been passing clothes around for about the last five years. Also, we have started eating much more organic foods & purchasing high recycled content paper products. We never use disposable bottles for water & carry our own reusable water bottles. This year my goal for earth day is to start composting.
These totes sound like a great idea for another way for me to “green up” my life.
I have started emailing everyone for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions rather than buying cards, envelopes and so forth. I have also started taking eco-friendly bags with me when I do my shopping rather than using the bags they offer at the stores.
On a scale of 1-10; Leo is about a 20…yeah, he’s that good!!!!!!!!

As of now, I am also subscribed to your feed via XML…and love the updates, Thank you!!!!!!

I have been teaching my two little girls to sort everyday items to be recycled. We make a weekly trip to the recycling center–they LOVE it! It is a good opportunity to teach a little mind!
Leo-10
I too have “green” grocery bags that I 99% of the time forget to take into the store. I would LOVE the JoeyTotes.
I subscribe to your blog and LOVE it! You make me laugh out loud all the time :0)
Love it!
but I can tell that he is happy, as long as I dont ask him to do way to much about it) so… I´d love to have one of those (how do u get to have them? to have all those stuff for “testing them” ? yeah u live in the states and I live in lovely south american Chile (I do love my country, Im just regarding the fact that we are still considered 3rd world country)… thats the answer.)
holy crap I always keep forgetting to bring my “special bag” and refuse accepting plastics… I´ve been in the “green” mood since a couple of years, then I got married and convinced hubby (drag him into it
Ok so… since I was a like 10 yeras old I´ve had a huge crush on Leo (since 2005 o 2006 I fell for the Gos, totally into him, but since they “share” green ideals here I am)… and totally get the fact that u cant refuse him
So I wish u a HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!!
I stilll want the JoeyTotes.
Hugs, Lila from USOG.
I have all my bills set-up as e-bill and pay electronically to reduce as much paper as possible. Run laundry with cold water with the exception of towels. I also have shopping totes I have bought and leave at home, then remember at checkout – these Joey totes seem like a great solution, of course as long as I remember to put them back in my purse. Tweeted!
we switched to cfl bulbs and like you i often forget my resusable totes either at home or in the car! these totes are a great idea!

Oooh great giveaway! I’ve been working to improvement my environmental consciousness with monthly “goals” — some of the ones I’ve been working on so far are working on actually remembering to bring all the canvas bags sitting in my car *into* the store, using alternative transportation for my commute, switching over to CFL lightbulbs, starting a garden, etc. Making progress!! These Joeytotes are definitely some of the best bags of that type that I’ve seen though, so that’s pretty cool. Thanks! Looking forward to clicking around your site.
Sounds like I had the same issue as you – forgetting the bags in the car. I love the new solution of the joeytotes. Clever. And Leonardo is super sexy. I think that baby polar bear is even checking him out.
I keep my bags in the front seat…cause I know I would forget…but I always forget when I do “other” shopping…I would love something that slips into my purse!
Subscribed now!
twittered too! (@misseliza123)
We use CFL bulbs.
We are planting fruit trees today and also working on our garden.
I subscribe
ok… i am a subscriber.
i am tweeting it…
my reusable shopping bag story goes the SAME as yours. I hate it. I remember them about 30% of the time…
We changed all of our lightbulbs, try never to run the ac, bought a front loading washer set, are growing our own garden, drive about 10% of what we used to, and I know there is more I just can’t think of it…
It is hard to resist Leo’s plea. I’ve gotten in the habit of getting out my bags and it feels SO good to walk out of the store without ANY plastic!
I’ve also switched light bulbs and to natural cleaners for household cleaning.
I want to start composting but haven’t yet. My goal for this year…
Here’s a link to my tweet too!
http://twitter.com/elainea/statuses/1585558798
One thing we have recently done to go “green” is stop buying paper towels. Now we use dish towels, dish cloths and cloth napkins instead. It’s so nice not having to buy paper towels. Now I’m working on using more natural cleaning products instead of all the harsh cleaners.
Wow, this is very cool. I often hang my head in shame, realizing that I have forgotten my canvas bags at home or in the car. I started carrying around a fold-away one in my purse, but they wrap up individually. What I love about this is that you can stow several in your purse. I’m definitely going to use that discount code to get a set. Thanks for sharing this! Oh, and yes…I will do whatever Leo tells me.
Yes I’ve done that as well. I never leave the house without my “bag of bags.”. I have a large reuseable bag that I fill with other reuseable bags. I schlepp the entire lot into the grocery, butcher baker whatever shop.My family recycles everything my town will allow. I’m a teacher and I’m always after the kids to REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE. My mantra.I even give my kids bags to keep in their cars to join the schlepp line. I’m a mom with several kids. We are all trying to do our part. Happy Earth Day. Now about that Joey Tote. I’d love a set to toss in the schlepp bag along with the others. I can give this set to my husband he only keeps two bags in his car. He also travels with one. They do make great extr bags in your suitcase. Pamm
Okay, tweeted about it too. http://twitter.com/secondglantz
For a very non-green girl (shame shame, workin’ on it), I now feel so Earth Day friendly because I always remember to grab my bags when I go into the grocery store! Now, if I could just program my brain to take them for those stops to Target, Dollar Tree, and other places…”you know, they hold other stuff besides groceries,” I have to tell myself! Anyone ever take one into Nordstrom’s?
We have made a push at home to be more “green” by recycling MORE STUFF, replacing our bulbs with low energy bulbs (as they burn out), and – in general – becoming more aware of our usage. My husband is THE WORST at leaving lights on as he moves through rooms…my darling daughter is so funny saying, “Daddy! Don’t you care about the environment???” He also bought a super fuel-efficient car this year and we use it as much as possible (rather than my Big Mama Pacifica).
I’m also a teacher and have carried the same personal commitments into my classroom – replacing bulbs in my lamps (yes, I have lamps in my classroom – can’t stand overhead lighting), recycling my lunch stuff/water bottles/etc. at school, and generally promoting awareness with my kids. (Check this link from earlier in the year http://readwithme.edublogs.org/2008/12/18/were-going-green/ )
Anyhow — I recently did become a subscriber to your blog…and here I go tweeting your stuff.
Keep postin’ and promotin’! Happy Earth Day!
I just started recycling all my newspapers and plastic.
We recycle just about everything we can. Since we’ve been making a conscious effort we’ve reduced our trash to about 2 bags per month!
we use rain barrels outside to harvest rain water. we are line drying some clothes, recycle, have an organic garden, keep light off and only use CFLs, use reusable bags everywhere.
I am using reusable grocery bags, and I don’t buy bottle water anymore. Leo is so hot! I would rate him a 10 hands down.
As the clerk places my groceries into the evil blue bags of death, I can’t help but feel like a selfish, earth-killing loser. LOVED that line! Made my day.
I try to be more green by spending less of it.
Okay you said if I already subscribed to your blog leave an additional entry so here it is.
Really what I do to try to be more green is do what you do with the bags but I always forget them. I try to buy recycled products even though I suck at recycling.
Those bags would be so perfect for me, I mean I would tell all my friends and they would tell their friends and I would tell my moms group and we could all help the world one bag at a time!
We are big on recycling and composting for our garden. We focus on buying local produce instead of worrying so much about organic, although we love when we get both!
Happy earth day! I installed the green cone (food waste composter) that our neighbor shared with us.
What a great Earth Day giveway!! And how can I refuse anything Leo asks me to do??? These bags would be a great way for me to start being more green!!! Pick me!
I’d like them because they’re easier to carry around =]
Well, I’ve tried those reusable bags you mentioned, and yes, I forget to bring them in half the time. Sigh. But I AM trying!
I haven’t been able to make the leap to cloth diapers though. :-/
Also, we’re growing a veggie garden this year, which hopefully will work out.
And (is this TMI?) I just started using a Diva Cup and cloth pads to cut down on that waste.

We have replaced ALL, of our regular light bulbs, with energy saving ones.
I have some reusable bags already, but I could always use some more. I do regularly use the one’s I have.
Yes I do the same thing! I also keep them in my trunk so I don’t forget them! I’d say about 1/3 of the time I remember. However if I do get the “evil blue bags of death,” I use them as trash bags for my car, small waste baskets and cleaning out my cat’s litter box.
We have been making a very big effort to recycle as much as possible and have invested in a kitchen compost container which we then empty into our yard waste bin (this all ends up getting turned into compost). We have replaced our energy sucking light bulbs with more efficient models. We also bought a new set of washer and dryer with energy star certification. Also, I definitely try to buy local whenever possible and I look for items that use less packaging.
Oh Leo, ever since I saw him on “Growing Pains” when I was 10 or 11 years old…I’ve been in love. 10, all the way baby!
I think it is so important to make sure we can leave a healthy world for our kids – and we can do this by making sure we are all concerned about sustainability and recycling.
We’ve starting recycling much more, using the reusable shopping bags and when we do get the plastic ones, we use those as garbage bags instead of disposing of them. We have replaced most of our lightbulbs with CFLs, I make sure we unplug stuff when we aren’t using it, and I’ve turned off the heated dry on our dishwasher. Little things, sure, but hopefully they all add up to making our earth healthier!
We recycle EVERY glass, aluminum, paper, and plastic product that comes into our home!!
I have a reusable bag that is clipped to my purse but I coud really use more. It doesn’t carry all of my groceries.
I’m trying to use the reusable bags, limit dryer use, and recycle.
I used cloth nursing pads and LOVED them. I never even bought any of the disposable because the cloth were so great. Also, we used cloth diapers for the first year. We also do the usual, recycle, totes when we remember, etc.
Great Earth Day giveaway! We have a rule in our house that if you are out and about with the kids you have to drive the clunker gas sipper instead of the plush family size SUV. Saves on gas big time.
I’m a subscriber. ( =
We use mostly cloth diapers for the baby. We also use cloth napkins, nursing pads and hankies.
I’m not doing anything particularly green (I did recently buy a cardboard tote from my local grocery but after the one trip to the car my arms were killing me… maybe a cardboard wagon would be better?).
HOWEVER, I do pledge to call these my LeoTotes, in honor of our mutual crush.
Deal?
We have changed our bulbs to CFLs. Just purchased some reusable shopping bags and now I am ready to use them whenever I go shopping. We also recycle our garbage, save glass jars for storage. I just thought of saving the frame of my glasses and simply get new lenses put into them. The possibilities are endless. If there is a will there is a way.
I went to an extremely informing seminar on the Environment that has been going on at my college all week. I read up on a lot. I bought a reusable mug from Starbucks so they can fill that one instead of wasting tons of paper cups each time I want a cup. I also want to purchase an aluminum water can so I don’t have to keep buying bottles. We use the energy-efficient and cheap light bulbs. I am also 100% vehemently against littering. I also don’t like to use plastic shopping bags. They not only waste money and plastic, but they’re unnecessary.
Oh, and BTW Leo is totally a 9 (Jensen Ackles is my only 10)!
These look interesting. We have been using reusable grocery bags for quite a while and have an assortment (Kroger, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) that I keep in my trunk for quick access. I would be interested to keep some of these in my purse, though, for the times when I get in the store and realize I’ve forgotten my bags.
I’ve bought 5 or 6 reusable totes from our local grocery store. I love them and use them for lots of other things, too…but I almost ALWAYS forget them at home. The only bag I had success with was a Target reusable bag that zipped into itself and I could stash it in my purse.
I SO need these joey bags!
Today, in the interest of going green, I am drying my laundry on the line. Of course, it might have to do with the fact that my dryer is broken, but energy is energy, right? Last summer, my dryer was broken for 3 weeks, and I dried everything on the line then…and kept it up for some things when the dryer got fixed!
Stumbled!
I’m learning to sew.
Tweeted! http://twitter.com/sandwiched/statuses/1596656615
I am trying to convince my loving fiance to help me with a rain gutter change that will take the rain and store it into a large container and use that water for our sprinklers. It’s not a cheap thing to do so I’m still trying to convince him! But other than that we recylcle everything we can and are updating our furnace, AC, washer/dryer… etc… etc… to use less energy. We are also putting vents in our attic so we use less energy to keep our house cool… Oh and we have converted our front (half of our front) yard to decorative rocks instead of grass that uses too much water… Just doing what we can…
I, like you, always forget my bags in the trunk! And Leo… a 9… I love him in “The Departed”!
I have become a bit of a recycling fanatic around here. It I think it will be remotely recyclable, into the bin it goes. I may or may not have been seen fishing things out of the garbage to put into the bin. Ahem.
I have got a set of great bags that I am forever forgetting to take into the stores with me. I’m pretty good about remembering on grocery day, but on the big Target runs and dollar store, that’s when I really forget. Great giveaway!
i subscribed.
and when you move, donate the things.= A lot of times , if you live in an apartment, people just throw many things away in those big dumpsters (to save time). As long as it is something that is usuable and in good condition, just donate the items to charity. Some people have nothing or need lots, would be happy to use your old stuff.
omg leo is so hot my eyes burn just looking at him!!
Jen how do I tell u that Im “promoting” this giveaway on Twiiter? via Tweet????… so here Im letting u know that Im doing it (conytagc).
Lila from USOG.
I recycle and compost, use my tote bags, changed my light bulbs to more energy efficent ones
I’m using reusable bags–when I remember them!!
Also, using natural cleaners!
I try to just use my bike panniers whenever possible instead of getting plastic bags. If I remember I’ll bring along a reusable bag, but that doesn’t always happen!
We have started composting.
I use reusable shopping totes… we started taking part in the recycling program here in town…. we changed out light bulbs…. and I try and turn everything off that we aren’t using and unplug things that aren’t being used.
I am always forgetting those damn bags. Here’s a problem my mate and I have encountered on the way to the store:
If you take the elevator to the bottom floor and then realize you have forgotten your grocery bags, is it better or worse for the environment to go back up in the elevator and get them?
I suspect that you expend more energy using the elevator twice more to get the canvas bags than is used in producing and recycling (or trashing) the plastic bags you would receive at the grocery store.
A few ways we have gone greener! We are using cloth diapers on my son now instead of disposable. I won’t buy any more paper towels, just using regular towels. I do have a few bags for grocery shopping, but usually my few aren’t enough, so I’d love another one! Thanks for the chance!
I actually remembered to take my green bag with me when I went to the store yesterday–yay! But it doesn’t really fold up; I’d love one I can put in my purse! =)
Tweeted, too! http://twitter.com/thesweetpetunia/status/1648491589
We always recycle our cans; we reuse the plastic grocery bags for bathroom garbage cans; I also have about 10 resusable cloth bags in my pantry…but ALWAYS forget to bring them to the store with me and always remember at the check out just like you. I feel so horrible about it! I need to use them!
To help the Earth stay greenier we here at home have stopped using chemical cleaning supplies, I make my own now with water, vinegar and lemon juice! Works just the same if not better. We’ve also switched to reusable bags instead of paper and plastic from the stores. We’ve always been a family that has recycled so that’s still the same!
It’s a great giveaway. Hope I’m lucky enough to win one!
