Miley Stripper Thoughts
On Friday night my kids watched the special “iFight Shelby Marx” episode of iCarly.

I thought it was innocent enough.
That was until all weekend and pretty much every single day since the show aired they’ve been playing “iFight Shelby Marx” rematch.
Ugh.
Kicking, punching, wrestling, pushing, shoving….you name it.
This really does reinforce my thoughts on my kids’ exposure to violence and sex on TV. I try to avoid it at all times because they are still so young (7 and 9) and I really do not see any need for it. Kids truly will emulate what they see their idols doing for better or for worse.
Thankfully, we did not tune in to the Teen Choice awards.

I’m counting my lucky stars that my kids are not Miley Cyrus / Hannah Montana fans. They’ve watched the show occasionally but I think her voice annoys them as much as it annoys me because they rarely turn it on. They’d much rather watch iCarly or Drake and Josh.
Miley has come out to defend her pole and she says that it was just something to hold onto while she was on top of the ice cream truck. You know, so she didn’t fall off while she was gyrating dancing.
This may very well be the truth, BUT there was SOME ADULT involved in this choreography that was fully aware that it would LOOK like a damn stripper pole. That is the image that they were trying to convey. I don’t care what Miley says. And I just think that is really irresponsible and pathetic that once again she is being taken advantage of.

Because at the end of the day, she is only sixteen years old. I’m really sorry, but no sixteen year old girl needs to be hanging off of any pole dressed like a stripper. Or posing in a magazine in that type of “Come f%#k me pose.” Maybe it is just me. Maybe I’m a prude, but I just want to know one thing.
WHO IS MAKING THESE DECISIONS FOR THIS CHILD?
And of course this whole Miley-stripper-pole-debachle reminds me of one of my favorite Chris Rock bits of all time. It is timeless advice for all fathers.
(Video Warning: Explicit language. Don’t watch in front of your kids and NSFW.)
Billy Ray, are you listening? Your only job in life is to keep her off the pole!!!
FAIL.
PS I LOVED Dane Cook’s remarks to Vanessa Hudgens too. “Girl, you gots to keep your clothes on.” Priceless.

Got something to say?

My 12-year-old daughter is the one who brought the Miley stripper story to my attention – she said, “Mom, why would she do that? She’s completely changing from who I thought she was.” I was so proud of my girl that she recognized that and that she’s aware of the dangerous path Miley’s headed down. I, too, wonder what her parents could possibly be thinking.

I missed the awards but my girls have been doing the iFight rematch too! Ugh, I almost regret letting them watch it and I generally think that’s a clean show.

in regards to the pole…like it wasn’t bad enough she came out of a trailer in a hoochie outfit. seriously. like i didn’t already know she was a trailer trash stripper. duh! her voice is VERY annoying. i’m still trying to figure out why girls wanna act & dress like a ho bag.

Wow. I’ve been so busy preparing for going back to school that I haven’t even heard about this yet. I’m SO disappointed in Miley and her “posse” right now. My six year-old daughter *LOVES LOVES LOVES* Hannah Montana/MIley Cyrus. I would have flipped out if she had seen that – or SEES that – stunt. I think, to me right now, the worst part of a star turning their image abruptly like this is that the comfort that a parent develops with a star is broken. Yes, if I had allowed my child to watch that appearance televised, I would have been there to flip the channel…but not before some damage is already done. Now, I question purchasing her music (what if the lyrics get too mature?) and watching any live appearances on shows (what if she pulls something this again?). As the mother of a young girl who WANTS TO BE cool and “grown up” – why can’t stars just KEEP IT CLEAN??? Why does it ALWAYS have to get “sexed up”? Come on, people!

You know, we can’t have it both ways. We can’t condemn pedophiles and then gleefully watch Miley make a mess of her life. So good for you for speaking out!

My daughter is 8 and also LOVES Miley/Hannah. We saw the performance, and while the actual video did not show her stripper pole dance (they kept to her face but the still photos revealed) it made me REALLY uncomfortable. NOT appropriate at all, and like others have said, where were her parents? Oh yeah, clapping for her in the audience. Parent FAIL!
I’d rather see my girl prancing around emulating the iFight movie, than shaking her head like *this*, while shaking her hips like *that* as that song suggested.
Not cool, not cool at ALL!

AAAARRRGGGGHHHH! I just saw the clips form this and it really makes me sad. Thanks for standing up for your kids! So trashy and sad.

And did you see Vanessa’s face when Dane Cook said that…. LMAO! PRICELESS.
I don’t get why kids are forced to grow up so fast and the way society is more accepting to children being sexual is beyond my comprehension. It seems like sex, cussing, drinking, and drugs are more and more acceptable but it will NOT be acceptable in my eyes. I try to teach my kids about it by instilling MORALS and VALUES into them! What happened to morals and values, btw??? I see more and more boys/young men NOT holding a door open for elderly people/women, cussing in front of their mothers, and so on and so forth.
Anywho..I’m with you! Miley needs to get off the pole & go back to Tennessee.

Do you think Miley is going the way of Brittany? It’s all kinda gross. Between all the magazine photoshoots half-nekid and the highly unfortunate dresses she wears to awards shows, it is obvious that her parents have abdicated responsibility there. Seriously. No child of mine.
Sometimes I’m just really happy I have a boy…

You know, I find that Nickelodean does have a lot of sexual/ violent themes. Disney really doesn’t have many at all. I must say though, that I think it is weird that you are against Miley Cyrus hanging onto a pole, but have no issues with Dane Cook talking about Vanessa Hudgens nudity, both of these are inappropriate for a teen show.
I think I can understand the Miley pole thing though, even if she wasn’t doing anything inappropriate on it, I think maybe they had her use it for adults watching, or whatever to see her in a way that isn’t a Disney kid. Let’s face it in 2 years Hannah Montana will stop making new shows, Miley will be 18 and if she is still doing the bubblegum pop stuff no one is going to take her serious, so I think putting her in these situations which may seem inappropriate is a way to make her seem older and more mature than she is and is seen on Disney. That or people don’t know how a 16 year old should act anymore since just about every 16 year old acts worse than Miley Cyrus has been. You can’t tell me at 16 you didn’t act worse than her?

i had not see that with Dane Cook. I am not a VH fan, at all, but that CRACKED me up… the way her face changed- I loved it.
this was a great post. I feel so bad for Genny. at 10, her cousins and friends have watched things that her dad and I just think aren’t necessary. It isn’t that we’re prude- but it’s our job to protect her. Exposure to the crap and garbage that adults contrive as appropriate child entertainment is NOT protecting her…

I have one word for that….Brittany!
As for her parents….all they see is dollar signs!

I totally agree with you on this. Personally I thought her outfit was too revealing also- why did she need her bra showing like that? Didn’t anyone say to her backstage “Hey, put an actual shirt on!” I mean it was the Teen Choice awards and here she was dancing way to provocatively for her age. Gross. And they shouldn’t dumb – you know if you dance holding onto a pole (for balance my ass) it’s not going to look good.
I totally believe that when these young girls see their Disney Idols behave like this, they will too. Her parents shouldn’t allow it! Young girls are so impressionable and of course they are going to want to be like these tv stars. Honestly if my daughter was old enough to know who Miley was, I wouldn’t allow her to watch her live shows because it’s not something she would need to see.
I am not looking forward to what will be waiting for my daughter on TV in a few more years, but at least I will be prepared with good sense & morals to do my best to keep her away from garbage.
[Reply]
YES! Thank you. I’m not a mother but I’ve got younger, impressionable cousins. Thankfully, they moved on from Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana a year ago to Selena and Demi. But still I worry. I don’t know how I feel about Demi, to be honest, but Selena seems safe so far.

I know I shouldn’t say this but I wouldn’t mind being Miley Cyrus with all the cool clothes and stylists and ‘getting it on’ with Billy Ray hahahaha! I know exactly what you mean about exposing kids though – I took my cousin to see the new Transformers and had to cover her eyes a couple of times because of saucy bits even though she was at the recommended age. I don’t think you can go anywhere without seeing it now which is a shame. Nothing seems innocent these days.

I’m packing up my 2 year old daughter and we are moving to the commune. We’ll come back out when she’s 25. Wait, then she might get married off at age 14. Never mind. What were those movies in the 80’s(?) where this family moves to the mountains in the middle of nowhere and they live off the land? There was a boy and a girl. Maybe that’s an option.

Did you see my blog on the whole Miley issue…it was specifically referencing the photo with Miley laying down that you have up there…the one with the “do me eyes”
Yea.
Billy Ray may be the worst parent in the business.

My thoughts exactly!
For the ones complaining that Dane Cook called out Vanessa- I’m thrilled he did it where kids could see for one reason! He’s saying it’s NOT COOL to take your clothes off. How many people say that these days? Very few! Kuddos to Dane! I like him even more now!
Also, sure at 16, we tried to be sexy, or what ever but clothes weren’t that revealing back then! Guess jeans, big shirts with a big belt hanging around your hips…. yes, very sexy! Today it’s just about appropriate to wear your underwear out in public. I know I sound old, but who else is going to protect my daughter?

Truthfully, if she doesn’t bring her image “more adult” her career will expire like an old gallon of milk very quickly. She can’t be 14, or 16, or even 18 forever.
That being said, after a lengthy discussion with my wife (and social conscience – I don’t tend to notice these things) we’ve come to the conclusion that the problem IS NOT with the stripper pole, it’s with the juxtaposition of the pole and the ice-cream truck, a VERY innocent image designed to cater to the much younger crowd.
Does anyone else see the problem with taking and sexualizing a VERY innocent image, and broadcasting that sexualized image out to impressionable “tweens”…
I don’t want to suppress maturity in children, but can’t we bloody let them grow up at a reasonable pace?
[Reply]
ugh i totally agree with you. miley is just ridiculous and her parents are going down the lohan path of parenting, so insane. and i loved dane’s remarks too. i mean seriously what is with all the nude pics kids?!
[Reply]
I am SO glad that she will hopefully be a distant memory by the time my baby girl is the age to care. Of course they’ll probably be some other exploited teenager out there whose parents just want to make money off of her, by that time. So not right.
That ‘death look’ on Vanessa’s face was worth Dane’s comment. Gosh I love that man.

My almost 4 year old decided she’s OVER cartoons and she’s been watching iCarly religiously (sigh). I was kinda wondering about the iFight ep (not too crazy about the “I’m gonna kick your butt” comment)– she hasn’t wanted to watch that one, so we’re good. I will NOT let her watch Hannah Montana because I think Miley’s a SUPA SKANK.
I also enjoyed Vanessa Hudgen’s look of death. Not a huge Dane Cook fan, but after that comment, I may reconsider. Sweeeeet.
Can’t have your cake and eat it too, girls! If you are going to make your fortune as a Disney/Nick star, ya gotta play the sweet & wholesome thing otherwise you’re gonna be criticized and lose fans. Life’s not fair, sweeties. I know it’s hard to not act like a hooker, but TRYYYYY.
Hoping Miranda Cosgrove will fly under the radar for awhile. She’s so cute.

grow up! its not like youre innocent children aren’t seeing the same things at school.

I appreciate those people who are only condemning Miley on the fact that she is so young. I feel kind of hurt though. I am well educated and had a very decent family life but just did not have a lot of money. Moving away to college, I couldn’t find a job after 6 months of searching high and low. Guess what my occupation is at the moment….I’m a nice person and never thought it would come to this but for the moment, it has. Things happen that you just have to deal with and take as it comes. Miley is much to young and I do think that that was a horrible mistake for children to do/see but do not condemn the occupation itself
