Book Giveaway
I was asked by my bloggy / publicist friend Lisa to review the Handy Answer Book for Kids (and Parents) by Gina Misiroglu and I jumped at the chance.
My kids are constantly bombarding me with questions about the world and a lot of the time I feel like a total idiot for not having any idea of the answers.
As a responsible parent, I can’t just send them off to google the answers. Most of the time the internet isn’t even helpful anyway. In addition to questioning the validity of the answers we have found online (do I need to remind you of that Yahoo Answer Fail Blog), a lot of the information that we find tends to be worded for adults and is way too complex for my 8 and 9 year old.
This book solves that problem because it is written in a way that is geared toward kids so it is very easy to understand. While the answers may not always complete, it provides a great jumping off point for more inquiry.
Here is a sampling of a few of the questions in the book:
- How do clouds float?
- Why is the ocean so salty?
- How does the microwave cook food so fast?
- Why do certain items glow in the dark?
The book covers such a wide variety of topics from outer space to how things work to tougher questions about life (such as death and divorce). We’ve had this book for about a month and I have found it to be a great resource. My kids, who love books about facts, are also really enjoying reading it on their own!
I’m giving away a copy to one lucky reader. To enter, just leave a comment with a question you’ve always wanted to know the answer or a question that your kids have stumped you with in the past below. This contest is restricted to US/Canadian residents only. The winner will be selected by a random draw on Tuesday, December 15th.
Good luck!

My 8 year old just asked me today, “Do animals and bugs fart?” When I was done cracking up, I had to answer honestly with “I have no clue!”

How come boats do not sink is a question that I got from my daughter that I was not really able to explain. Thanks for the chance to win.
