Hot Mamas Know–Adult Acne Skin Care Regimen
Three posts in one day! I promise this will be the last one (unless of course there is a surprise announcement of a Gosling/McAdams wedding-that would be the only thing that would make me post again today. I swear.) I just wanted to participate in this fun carnival at Absolutely Bananas. Basically the idea is to post a beauty secret that you have that helps you to look and feel your finest. Here is mine:
All my life I’ve struggled with acne. My mom would always tell me that when I become an adult it would go away. Then after I technically became an adult (still not sure if I am one) it actually seemed to get worse. So she told me that after I had kids it would probably pass. Well, two kids later and you guessed it?? No better and I actually think it may have gotten worse. I’m beginning to think that mom may be trying to curse me with her prophecies.
I have tried what seems like every product on the market (and even a few prescribed by a dermatologist). While some work for a short time period, eventually the zits come raging back. (Usually at that time of the month, because the joys of being a woman are plentiful and neverending.)
I had just about given up hope on ever having clear skin when I happened to stumble upon a regimen that is working pretty well. (Basically I was just trying to use up some old products that I had bought because I didn’t feel like spending any more money on new stuff.) I don’t know if it is just the combination or what but my skin has really cleared up a lot. I don’t want to jinx myself by posting this, but this is what I’ve been using:
First step is to cleanse with Clean and Clear Oil Free Foaming Facial Cleanser. At first I noticed that this made my lips sting. I’m thinking that is probably not a good thing, but it doesn’t seem to break me out so I can get past this.

After drying off, I apply Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 hydrating treatment. If I had to guess I would say that this is the key ingredient to what is causing the improvement in my skin.

Next, I have been using Olay Complete all day moisture lotion with SPF 15 during the day. I really don’t use a moisturizer at night, but I know I probably should. I’ve always come back to this moisturizer because it is light and works well with makeup.

Lastly, I have also been trying to do this Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque once a week. I love the way this makes my skin feel after I wash it off. It really does help to minimize pores.

My skin isn’t Rachel McAdams smooth and clear but there has been a dramatic decrease in the appearance of those giant pimples from Hell that pop up on my chin. I actually went through one whole month without one, so that is really saying something for me. Another bonus is that the products are cheap. If you are on a budget, like me, this is a good thing. I wish I could afford more fancy products, but right now food and shelter is a higher priority.
Now I have a favor for anyone who happens to read this. If you have a favorite mascara, I’d love it if you left me a comment telling me the brand you recommend. Mine is pretty much a big clumpy black mess and I need to get a new one but have no idea what to buy. Help a girl out and leave a comment. Thanks!

Got something to say?

I can’t wear mascara…so I have given up. Clear might work, lengthens and no black clumps.
Also take a look at L’Occitane’s Immortelle line of skincare products. As a lifelong acne sufferer, it has been a lifesaver. Not frugal, but worth the dough. But also you use such a small amount, that I guess it works out in the end.
Also MOISTURIZER helps a TON with that whole “ILOOKLIKEAPRUNEFROMTHESUN” thing. (Trust me on this one.) Shea butter, of JOJOBA are the best. And both of the ones on my post are GREAT for that. The spray tan can be a bit drying.
Thanks for the great post.
I would love to try something like L’Occitane, but it sadly isn’t in our budget right now. Now if I could just strike oil in my backyard and get a little piece of that pie I’d have the clearest skin in town. Not that I’d rub the oil on my skin or anything like that.
Note to L’Occitane: If you would like to send me some of your wonderful products to sample, I’d be more than happy to blog about them.
I quite enjoy this post. I too struggle a lot with acne…and I even went on accutane once and my derm promised me that it would clear my skin forever….
….lies.
I would also just add in that I use pretty much the same products (some variation) but I also use a Neutrogena Clear Pore Oil-Eliminating Astringent and it works pretty well. Its sort of satisfying to see all the oil rub off on to a cotton ball.
As far as mascara goes, the best kind of cheap mascara is by far Maybelline. I really love their Define-a-Lash mascara. They have it in volume and lengthening. I have really long eyelashes, so I tend toward the volume. But most of Maybelline’s mascaras are great. I’ve used their Sky High, Great Lash and Unstoppable and have enjoyed all of them. They never clump, they make my eyelashes look great and they’re not too expensive. But always remember to throw out mascara after 6 months…it tends to dry up and get old and not work quite as well.
Now if you want to spend a little more money on mascara, head on over to a department store and grab some Lancome. All of their mascara is truly wonderful, but I love L’Extreme the most. I don’t buy it very often, but when I do..I use it like every day. It never clumps either
Hope that helps
I have the same EXACT skin as you, I think. Am running out to drugstore for all this stuff immediately.
Anyway, mascara:
I used to love Lancome’s Defincils (NOT Intencils, which sucks ape sweat).
BUT, I discovered a less expensive substitute:
L’Oreal’s Voluminous Full Definition Mascara. I love it almost as much as Lancome’s (and I think they’re the same company, right?).
Anyway! Good luck!
I’m a clean and clear fan too. I have to use it occasionally during the summer, but then during the winter it’s too drying on my skin. My skin is just weird.
I’m curious to hear what mascara recommendations you get. I have several I’m ok with, but not one that I love. If you find one, won’t you please blog about it in next month’s HMK so we can learn about it!?
Ok, I’ve used umpteen different kinds of mascara in my life, but just this past year I found, while “trying out” different kinds of mascara, that Avon has this fabuloso mascara that doesn’t clump, it doesn’t smear all over your face when you cry, and it just plain makes your eyelashes go WOW! It has these little fibers in it that attach to your lashes (freaked me out at first, because it looked like hair) and it adds length and volume. I’m in love. I’ll never use anything else. It’s called UpLifting Mascara and the brush can actually bend so you can apply the product easier. Now, the shameless plug: I actually sell Avon (I can send a free shipping offer if you want it). But reality is, my own mother wants a case of this mascara. No big deal usually, but this woman has never really worn much makeup… except now… since she gets along with a mascara. By the way, I think they are 2 for 8 bucks right now or something. I don’t know how much Lancome charges so I’m rather oblivious to what the price of a “NICE” mascara usually is. Interesting to see what other replies you get on this topic!
